Getting into IIT is a big achievement only if you manage to choose the right branch for yourself.
You should analyze your ambitions and interests in a particular field and determine what you possibly imagine yourself to be doing in 5 years and then make an informed decision. Clarity of goals is extremely necessary to make this crucial decision of choosing a branch.
If you want to enter politics, then your branch hardly matters.
If you want to become an entrepreneur try to get an idea of the type of company you want to start
Basically, the choice of the branch is strictly a personal preference and cannot be objectively decided.
One of my friends studied Mechanical at Tezpur University. Let me share his experiences and knowledge about the college. He, being a student there, will know the intricacies of the college and how they function.

Mechanical Engineering can get you a job in the following sectors
The placements and the roles you will be offered depend a lot on your interest and how much you have prepared in the last 3 semesters.
IIT Bombay is indeed one of the best Engineering institutes in India and takes the highest JEE AdvanceD rankers in their Mechanical Engineering branch. This is why it attracts the best companies and roles.
The choice of Institute depends largely on your inclinations and area of interest. For instance, if you are into Computer Science and want to pursue a career in the same, the best choice would be IIIT-H. Sadly, BITS is not among the top CS colleges.
Mechanical Engineering programs offered at top colleges are good but you have to invest extra time and offers to land a decent job. Going for a low-package job will discredit the purpose of pursuing Mechanical Engineering.
In my opinion, BITS is the right choice for you as you get to interact with great peers and also get the opportunity to work on projects with students of other branches. You should work hard to secure high marks only then you can land a good package and also help you in MS. One can do MS in Robotics or Design to identify their area of interest.
Some education and experience-based profiles that guarantee a high package around 50 LPA are as follows
The education and experience of the profiles below will help you reach 50 LP at 26 years of age with just B.Tech and work experience (CSE and Mech)
Mechanical branch in UIET Chandigarh is a good decision but it comes with a drawback. My cousin just completed his B.Tech from this institute and according to him, the following are some of the insights.
However, the placement is much better for subjects like IT, CSE, and ECE. This is because Not too many core mechanical companies visit UIET and many non-technical companies don't allow mechanical and electrical students to sit in their placements as they look for coding experience.
You will be able to change branches in Heritage Institute of Technology if you have a GPA of 8.5. It is very easy to score a GPA of 8.5 or above in the first year as all you will be studying is the basics.
There is also not much competition when it comes to changing to Mechanical as it is not that difficult. However, it is more difficult to change branches like CS to ECE.
Even if your CGPA is average, you can apply for the change in the branch. You will most likely be able to get your branch changed.
NIT Jalandhar is famous for its excellent placement drives. The Department of Mechanical Engineering is one of the best departments at NIT Jalandhar and has been consistently performing better with time. This reflects in the continual effort of our academics, research and the quality of our students. In Mechanical Engineering, if your CGPA is more than 6 your placement is assured. This year the major recruiters were Aarti Industries Limited, Infosys and Larsen & Toubro. Around 7 students were placed this year. The placement percentage was 80.23%.
The placements for Mechanical Engineering at NIT Jalandhar are particularly lower than in other branches. The total job offers this year was 79. This year's average package was INR 7.87 LPA. The placement rate of Mechanical Engineering is 80.23%.
Some companies that recruited students from the Mechanical branch are:
Aarti Industries Limited
CGI India
Larsen & Toubro
Infosys
SRF Limited
The average package for the mechanical branch is around INR 6.6 LPA.
Engineering Department usually has more companies visiting for placements than IIT Roorkee and the condition is worse in new IITs. The average package is also at par with the packages of most branches.
In fact, any branch at an old and big IIT like Madras is better than CS at new IITs. the packages of CS at new IITs are on the same level as packages offered in normal branches of old IITs. Moreover, the campus life and exposure offered in big old IITs can never be compared to the new IITs which are still struggling to reach IIT standards in terms of their infrastructure and placements.
Secondly, Engineering Design is not completely mechanical, but rather a combination of electrical and mechanical. This department has the highest number of labs and assignments. and thus a lot of assignments.
Overall, the coursework pertaining to the department is full of rigor and requires much more effort than other branches. If you are ready for that kind of commitment, go for it but if you eventually want to do coding, chose an easier branch that will give you enough time to learn to code.
Let me ask you genuinely, are you sure a high package is enough to satisfy you irrespective of the type of work you will be doing? If you go for Electrical Engineering at IIT Roorkee for lucrative placements and end up with average grades and a below-average package, you suffer. All the more even if you get placed with a good package but have no interest in the job, then after some time it will become a burden for you.
The first and foremost thing is to change your mindset and look at things from a bigger perspective. Your criteria for judging a certain should include much more than just placements. You can analyze some things like checking what intrigued you the most during your +2 levels.
If it is Mechanics, fluids, and Thermodynamics that excites you, then you should go for Mechanical Engineering.
If you are inclined towards Electric circuits, Electromagnetism, then your department is Electrical Engineering.
Basically, placements depend on your academics and grades. It’s likely that a top student from Mining ends up with a higher package than an average student of Electrical Engineering. Money and education combined should be the determining factors and not money alone. After all, your education must motivate you enough to secure the best package.
