Should I take mechanical at Thapar University or metallurgical and material sciences at PEC, Chandigarh?

UN
Urmimala Nath Posted On : May 5th, 2021
B.Tech from Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh (2019)

Both Mechanical and metallurgical engineering at Thapar and PEC Chandigarh have their own pros and cons. Let's list them out to opt for the best college for you.

PEC Chandigarh:

  • PEC Chandigarh has a better brand name compared to Thapar University. But Thapar is surely not far behind.
  • PEC has an amazing culture that prepares its students for future career challenges.
  • One can prepare well for their further MBA, Mtech, or MS entrance exams while being at PEC Chandigarh.
  • Being a government college, PEC is doing a great job in its placement department. There was a 28% hike in their placement record in 2020 despite the pandemic situation.

Thapar University:

  • Thapar has an amazing placement record and coding culture.
  • As a brand name, it's growing up to the heights of PEC.
  • If you opt for metallurgical science, you will limit yourself to few core companies or steel and other manufacturing firms.

Unless you are into metallurgical sciences it's better to opt for mechanical engineering as you can even jump into both technical and non-technical firms.

Quick comparison:

Particulars

PEC

(Mechanical Engineering)

Thapar University

(Metallurgical and material sciences)

Entrance exam

JEE Main

JEE Main

Total fees

6.39 lakh

8.85 - 17.36 lakh

Placement rate

90%

84%

Highest CTC offered

15 LPA

40 LPA

Average CTC offered

6.5 LPA

6-7 LPA

Out of the above two, ME at PEC seems like a better option. PEC being a government institute has half the tuition fee of Thapar University which saves you a lot. If you plan on an MBA further, it's better to opt the best out of two and start preparing from the first year of your college itself.

Which is better, civil engineering at IIT Bhubaneswar or metallurgical engineering at IIT Indore?

SM
Sauvik Mishra Posted On : August 19th, 2020
M.Tech Machine Design, National Institute of Engineering, Mysore (2020)

As your choice of the branch is different it’s difficult to choose which will be the better choice. You should choose the branch you are more interested in and the institute which offers the batter program for that branch. Metallurgical engineering is a sub-branch of Mechanical engineering, whereas Civil is a core branch and have more option for higher studies. However, the employment opportunities for both branches are almost the same.

NIRF ranked IIT Bhubaneswar 17th in the engineering category. The department of Civil Engineering, the Scchool of Infrastructure at IIT Bhubaneswar have 8 laboratories well-equipped with modern facilities to carry out academic projects and research works. In 2019 the JEE Advanced closing cutoff for Civil Engineering was 7054-14844.

According to the placement statistics, 89% of civil engineering students got placements in 2019. The average package for civil engineering was INR 11.51 LPA. Core companies that visited the campus for employing Civil Engineering students were HPCL, IOCL, L&T.

IIT Indore is ranked at 13th place in NIRF 2019. The institute offers a good Metallurgical Engineering program with decent placement. In 2019 the JEE Advanced closing cutoff for the Metallurgical Engineering branch was 9795.
Around 99% of the students got placements in 2018-19 at IIT Indore and the average package was INR 16.5 LPA. Whereas, the highest package was around 43 LPA. The top companies that participated in the placement were HPCL, Honda, Bharat Petroleum, etc.

How are academics and equipment exploration in metallurgy at IIT Bhubaneswar?

SG
Sunita Gupta Posted On : August 14th, 2020
Indian Institute of Technology, Bhubaneswar

The department of metallurgy is one of the best departments at IIT Bhubaneswar. After the CSE department, the metallurgical department got 90% placement from IIT Bhubaneswar in 2019. The metallurgy is the only department in which the 2nd year students get internships. IIT Bhubaneswar also signed MoU with Shanghai Jiao Tong University exclusively for metallurgical students. As Odisha is blessed with minerals there is an abundance of field trips. The institute has experienced professors in the department in their respective background and currently, the faculty members are engaged in various research projects sponsored by Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of Orisha, and also few consultancy projects for companies like Tata Steel Limited, Tata International Limited, etc.

The department of metallurgy at IIT Bhubaneswar has well-furnished laboratories equipped with state-of-art instruments. The environment is also research-oriented. Further, many students have also gone abroad for further research.

What should I take Metallurgy and Material Science at IIT Indore or Electrical at IIT Bhilai?

AR
Anirudh Roy Posted On : January 11th, 2021
B.Tech Mechanical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology, KGP (2020)

In general, it is better to choose the branch of your choice. Given below are a few trade-offs of the two choices given on the question which may help you in making the decision.

MEMS - IIT Indore:

  • Administration: IIT Indore belongs to the 2008-09 batch of IITs. Although it can’t be compared with older IITs but it has made remarkable progress in this short span of time. The administration and departments are well-settled. Extra-curricular at the institute are also developing with time. In 4-5 years, the institute is expected to have a great future.
  • Course: BTech MEMS at IIT Indore is fairly new and the duration of the existence of the course is the same as the B Tech Electrical course at IIT Bhilai. However, the MEMS department has been functioning for a while at IIT Indore. As a department it has experience. The faculties are great.
  • Placements: MEMS has a lower placement rate as compared to other core branches of engineering. Metallurgy and Material Science is a niche field of study and the degree outcome is more research-oriented.
  • Change of Branch: However, you can change your branch to Electrical or Mechanical from MEMES at IIT I, if you work hard in your 1st year. Changing to CS is always difficult because of the competition.

Electrical at IIT Bhilai:

  • Facilities: IIT Bhilai was established back in 2016. It is only 4 years old. Electrical is a core Engineering discipline with better career prospects. But the disadvantage of this choice is the institute. You will have a few seniors in your branch and temporary faculties.
  • Extracurricular: You will have good opportunities to start events, clubs, in the institute. On the other hand, the future at this institute is a bit uncertain.
  • Campus Life: The institute also does not have a proper campus. You will not have a proper campus life for the next 4 years.

The table below shows a brief overview of the two institutes.

Particulars

IIT Indore

IIT Bhilai

Average CTC

17 LPA

11.22 LPA

Seats

53

54

Fees

INR 9.15 Lakh

INR 4.90 Lakh

One of my friends had an option between Mechanical at IIT Indore and CS at a new IIT. He chose Mechanical at IIT Indore. Judging by his experience it is safe to say that he made the right decision at least for 2-3 more years.

The choice is up to you if you would rather trade off on the branch or on the institution. If you are confident you can secure a good future from the limited opportunities a new IIT can offer, you should go for it.
