IIT Jammu PhD Eligibility Criteria

For full-time IIT Jammu PhD admission, applicants must grasp any one of the following eligibility criteria given below:

  • Post Graduation degree in Engineering/ Technology or a Post Graduation degree by Research in Engineering/ Technology along with a good quality academic record.
  • Post Graduation degree in Science (with a good quality academic record) and a valid GATE / UGC/ CSIR-JRF/ GPAT/ NBHM score or equivalent requirement.
  • Applicants with an Undergraduate degree in Engineering/ Technology with an exceptional academic record and a valid GATE score in the eligible discipline
Specialization Eligibility Criteria
Chemical Engineering Applicants must have a minimum aggregate of 60% marks (or 6.5 Grade Point out of 10) (55% marks for SC/ ST) in their Post Graduation degree. Post Graduation degree in Sciences with a valid score in GATE/ UGC/ CSIR/ NET/ NBHM or equivalent qualification B.Tech./ B.E qualification with a valid GATE score can apply for direct admission to the PhD program.
Electrical Engineering Applicants having B.Tech/B.E qualification and having a CGPA/ CPI score of 8.00 (out of 10.0) and above with a valid GATE score can apply for admission to the PhD program. An applicant with the Under Graduation degree from any IIT and having a CGPA/ CPI score of 7.00 (out of 10.0) can apply for admission to the PhD program.
Mechanical Engineering Applicants must have obtained a minimum aggregate of 60% marks (or 6.5 Grade Point out of 10) (55% marks for SC/ ST) in their Post Graduation. Outstanding applicants having a B.Tech./ B.E qualification with a valid GATE score can apply for direct admission to the PhD program.
Civil Engineering Post Graduation degree in engineering with marks/ CPI not below 55% marks (or CPI of 5.5 on a 10 - point scale) or the minimum passing marks (or CPI) either is greater.
Humanities and Social Science Post-graduation or equivalent degree in Cognitive Science, Commerce, Economics, English Literature, Linguistics, Management, Philosophy, Psychology, or any other significant discipline with a minimum aggregate of 55% (or 6.0-grade point out of 10).
Physics Minimum aggregate of 60% score or equivalent CGPA (relaxation of 55% or equivalent CGPA for SC/ ST) in Post Graduation.

IIT Jammu PhD Admission Process

Applicants searching for IIT, Jammu admission in Humanities and Social Sciences subjects must have a valid score in UGC NET. Admission to a PhD course in Chemistry/ Mathematics/ Physics/ HSS requires CSIR/ UGC NET/ GATE/ DST INSPIRE/ NBHM requirement.

For an Engineering discipline, a GATE qualification is pleasing for M.Tech. degree holders, and essential for B.Tech. degree holders with excellent academic certificates.

Shortlisted applicants will be further assessed based on the interview and the applicant’s research scheme. Applicants can apply for the IIT Jammu PhD program throughout the year, on the other hand, the shortlisting and selection are done twice a year by a particular department.

Ques. What are the criteria for submitting the sponsorship/NOC by IIT Jammu PhD part-time candidates?

Ans. Part-time IIT Jammu PhD candidates are required to submit a “No Objection Certificate” on a letterhead from the appropriate authority in the organization clearly stating the following: 

  • The candidate is permitted to pursue studies on an Off-Campus basis and their official duties permit them to devote sufficient time for research.
  • Facilities for research in the candidate’s field of research in the area in which admission is sought are available at the candidate’s place of work.
  • The employer must expressly undertake to relieve them to stay on the campus to enable the candidate to complete the “Course work” and attend the evaluation at the end of every semester.
  • If the candidate after joining the PhD program changes the organization, he should get NOC from the new organization as well.

Ques. What are the IIT Jammu PhD criteria for full- time and part-time?

Ans. Recently, in the authority of Computer Science and Engineering at IIT Jammu, there is no official provision for part-time PhD students. IIT, Jammu essentially encourages only the students in the full-time category. However, candidates who are serving in reputed national research centres/organizations (like ISRO, DRDO, CSIR etc.) and with the extraordinary academic and research track record, may be well-thought-out as a special case subject to them clearing the other required official procedure for the admission and subject to the alignment of their research interest with that of the faculty members at IIT, Jammu.

Ques. I am only B.Tech. Am I eligible for the IIT Jammu PhD program?

Ans. Candidates having B.E./ B.Tech. degrees from IITs with exceptional CGPA and a high GATE score may be eligible. However, in general, an M.E./ M.Tech. The degree is favoured to be able to get an admission.

Ques. How will an IIT Jammu PhD candidate be placed?

Ans. A candidate can participate in placement activities at IIT Jammu. The candidate will have to follow the process of placement.

Ques. In how many semesters a candidate can complete the IIT Jammu PhD course work?

Ans. The minimum number of semesters required to complete the course work will be governed by the PhD ordinance in effect at the time. Please refer to the institute website for the PhD ordinance. However, typically, a scholar would require at least two semesters to complete the course work, before being allowed to appear for the comprehensive program and subsequently on registering for the research work, upon successfully clearing the comprehensive test.
