Why is IIT Kharagpur Electrical Engineering department so deadly? How do they differ from others' IIT Electrical Department?
Anumita ChatterjeeStudied at Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (IITK)
My brother had offers from IITs to choose any branch except CSE and chose Electrical Engineering in IIT KGP. To date, he does not regret his decision. There are ups and downs in every Institute; it just takes time to adapt yourself to such situations.
It is true that some professors overdo it and push you to the extreme, but if you look at this in a positive manner, it’s their pushing that eventually helps you succeed. There are many seniors who might make fun of your tiny efforts in the labs but trust me, today when they will look back, they will surely be regretting the time they wasted watching movies or series.
My brother told me that Electrical Engineering gave him so many friends and experiences that make him yearn for college life today. The labs are old-fashioned and lack much activity in contrast to a SigNet lab/ Power Systems lab.
Curriculum: The primary aim of the course curriculum offered in Electrical Engineering at IIT KGP is to impart to students tools and skills that will make it possible for them to excel in departments such as Electronics, Communication, Computers, Aerospace, and Energy.
Job prospects: An important point to note is that Electrical Engineering does not prepare you for a job but for higher education in the respective areas. Many people from the department pursue M.S. in Aerospace and Material Sciences.
Faculty: While many may not agree, the faculty is excellent except for a few. The cream faculty include Prof. D Das, Prof TKB, Prof S Patra, and Prof S Chattopadhyay among others. Interacting with them might change your opinion regarding the IIT KGP faculty.
Research: The research is obviously not at par with that conducted in CS or EC, but it surely does justice to the department itself.
I think it’s high time people clear misconceptions about Electrical Engineering and develop a positive opinion about it. We should stop running after jobs and companies and in turn let companies seek us.
The Economics branch is slowly becoming one of the best branches of IIT Kharagpur. Integrated M.Sc. (5 years) in Economics opens with JEE rank 3615 and closes at 5439 as per JoSAA 2022. However, it’s not necessary to evaluate a course on the basis of its opening and closing rank because you can get your branch changed on the basis of your performance in the first year.
A student has to obtain around 8.73 CGPA in order to get their branch changed to Economics. You will have to work very hard to get a high CGPA for branch change.
Curriculum: I have entailed some topics covered over the semesters. For a detailed list, you can visit the official website.

Generally speaking, the best branches at IIT Kharagpur are considered to be CSE and ME. The choice of a branch depends on many factors and is mostly a matter of personal preference rather than the demand of the branch. Irrespective of the branch you join, IIT provides the following to any IIT student
Infrastructure
Academic environment
Course-structure
Choice of subjects
Geniuses in the form of peers
All these things that groom are given to an IITian irrespective of his branch and makes him worthy either of employment to any industry or a good candidate for higher studies in top foreign universities. This is mainly because of the IIT tag.
There are many instances where students from Agricultural & Food Engineering (the least demanded branch) were able to get admission to Robotics’ at the Robotics Institute at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), or the MS program of the University of Rochester, New York to study Computational Linguistics.
Ultimately it’s not your branch that determines your worth but
Your academic performance
Knowledge and skills gained through productive activities done by faculty and peers
Communication skills developed during your time at IIT.
These are much more important and come before your branch preference.

Atul SharmaWorks at Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur (IIT KGP)
The integrated economics Course from IIT Kharagpur has a wide scope. This course comes under the umbrella of the humanities and social science department. Some of the many prospects offered by this course are
Higher studies: A student who is inclined towards higher studies can opt for Masters in Economics from any prestigious college in India and abroad and can even get a PhD degree provided that he has sufficient knowledge of economics, a stable GPA and some excellent publications.
Government jobs: The scope of the score spreads to the government sector as well with jobs like RBI, Indian economic service or civil services that help you serve your country. The best part about these jobs is that you can also apply for study leave and pursue higher studies on official holidays.

While it is true that the top companies like Google and Microsoft won’t let you sit for placements, you can become a software developer for average banks. Later, you can target technical giants that don’t judge employees on the basis of the branch.
MBA: This is a very common combination. Many economic students target IIMs or other business schools to pursue MBA. Moreover, with a non-engineering background, you can always have an upper hand in B-school admissions.
Data Analyst/Scientist: This is the most common job profile of IIT Kharagpur students who have done an economics majors. Moreover, with the increased demand for AI and machine learning, this has become one of the most appealing fields today.
Finance: The integrated economy course at IIT Kharagpur has many subjects related to finance and mathematics. This makes the student suitable for finance roles and you are likely to become a quantitative analyst.
Consulting/operations: Consulting and Operation roles are available to random students, irrespective of their branch.
The best part about the economics degree is that you have a lot of free time at your hand and can explore other fields, unlike engineering students who are always busy with their coursework. Moreover, if you’re not sure about any particular branch, then Economics can definitely be a good choice.
