GNDU Ph.D Eligibility Criteria

  • Candidates having a Master’s degree in the allied/concerned subject with at least 55% marks (6.18 CGPA out of 10) of Guru Nanak Dev University or an equivalent degree of a recognized Indian University in the subject concerned are eligible to apply for Ph.D.
  • For SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/differently-abled candidates, 50% marks or equivalent CGPA out of 10 are required to be eligible to apply for Ph.D.

GNDU Ph.D Admission Guidelines

Admissions are based on Ph.D. Eligibility Test which is conducted by GNDU to fill seats for the Ph.D. program. After qualifying the eligibility test, candidates are called for counseling in the respective departments

Candidates who have qualified UGC(NET)/ SLET/GATE/UGC-CSIR (JRF) examination/INSPIRE/GPAT/ICAR-SRF (PGS)/ Maulana Azad National Fellowship/ Rajiv Gandhi Fellowship awardees /JEST/teacher fellowship holder or has passed M.Phil. from Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar.

  • Visit the University’s website or admission portal for online registration and other details of the Ph.D.
  • Pay the registration fee amount of Rs 1200 through Bank Challan at any branch of HDFC bank or through online mode.
  • For SC/ST category, the registration costs Rs 600.

GNDU Ph.D Eligibility Test

  • The Ph.D. Eligibility Test is a qualifying exam/step for participating in the counseling for admission.
  • The qualifying marks for the Ph.D. eligibility test are 55%. The syllabus of the Eligibility Test shall be based on UGC-NET. The eligible candidates shall appear for an interview to be conducted by the Board of Control (BOC). 
  • The other conditions for Ph.D. admission are as per the prevailing Ordinances of GNDU, for its Ph.D. Programs. 
  • Simply qualifying in the Ph.D. eligibility test does not ensure admission to Ph.D.
  • The validity of the Eligibility Test qualified by the students will be for 3 years.
  • The exam pattern of the GNDU Ph.D. Eligibility Test consists of two papers:

(i) First paper is compulsory and common to all candidates. It contains 25 MCQs on mental ability & general awareness carrying 25 marks. 

(ii) Second paper is subject-specific. It contains 50 objective type MCQs carrying 1 mark each, and 5 short answer type questions, carrying 5 marks each.

  • The candidates who have qualified UGC(NET)/ UGC-CSIR (JRF) examination/SLET/GATE/GPAT/ICAR/INSPIRE/Rajiv Gandhi Fellowship awardees/teacher-fellowship holders are exempted from the Ph.D. eligibility test. 
  • Candidates who have passed M.Phil. from Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, or having a Certificate of qualifying GNDU Ph.D. Eligibility Test(with validity) will be exempted from Ph.D. Eligibility Test.

GNDU Ph.D FAQs

Ques. What are the guidelines for coursework for GNDU Ph.D.?

Ans. Course work is mandatory, after admission as per rules. A Ph.D. candidate will be required to obtain at least a 'B' grade in each course. However, a candidate must have to secure a CGPA of 6 or above, to be eligible to submit the thesis.

Ques. What is the normal time for the submission of a Ph.D. thesis at GNDU?

Ans. The normal time limit of thesis submission is four years. And, the maximum time limit is seven years (including extensions) from the date of provisional registration.

Ques. Do Ph.D. scholars have to submit the research papers at GNDU?

Ans. Yes, Ph.D. scholars must publish at least one research paper in a UGC approved journal and make two paper presentations in conferences/seminars before the submission of a summary of the thesis for adjudication.

Ques. What are the guidelines for part-time Ph.D. candidates at GNDU?

Ans. The part-time candidates will have to attend Pre-Ph.D. courses regularly as per the programs of the respective departments. In the case of science subjects, the supervisor of the candidate will certify through the concerned Head of the department that the candidate has pursued his/her research for at least one & half years including Course Work in the concerned department. 

Ques. Is distance mode allowed for the Ph.D. program at GNDU?

Ans. No, the University has not allowed Ph.D. programs through distance education mode.
