Which is better, civil at IIT Bhubaneswar or metallurgy at IIT Indore?

PK
Pravesh Kumar Posted On : August 14th, 2020
B.Tech Electrical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology, Bhubaneswar (2022)

Both the branches are totally different from each other so first decide what you want to study for the next 4 years. Both the IITs are new and there is not much difference in them. Metallurgy is a sub-branch of mechanical and civil is a core branch. Civil engineering has better job opportunities if you compare it to metallurgy engineering.

The average package at IIT Indore for the year 2019 was 16.05 LPA and at IIT Bhubaneswar it was 11.44 LPA. If you want to get a job in the core-sector then it would be a bit difficult because both the branches have very low placements in the core sector. Students usually go for higher studies and others for non core placements. Civil engineering will give you a better opportunity if you want to go for higher studies.

The suggestion will be that you should focus on what branch you are more passionate about and choose that. Don’t go compare colleges, both are IITs therefore are equally good and offer similar facilities.

How is the placement of metallurgy in IIT BHU, Varanasi?

PM
Prashanth Mathur Posted On : August 14th, 2020
M.Tech Metallurgy & Materials Science and Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Varanasi (2018)

The placement scenario of IIT-BHU metallurgical engineering is not as good as other branches but this is improving every year. More companies like Tata Steel, Tata Motors, and Saint Gobain are coming with job offers for B.Tech, IDD, and M.Tech students. The chances of getting placed are more for a B.Tech student than for an M.Tech student.

  • In the year 2016, 52 B.Tech, 16 IDD, and 10 M.Tech students registered for placement out of which 36 B.Tech, 11 IDD, and 1 M.Tech student secured jobs. The highest CTC was 13 LPA, the lowest CTC was 5 LPA and the average CTC was 7.78 LPA. These statistics have improved in successive years.

  • In the year 2019, 44 out of 47 registered students got placed and the average CTC was 9.67 LPA. This clearly shows that the percentage of students getting placed and the average package amount has improved over the years.

Moreover, not all students register for placement rather they prepare for other entrance examinations like CAT, GATE, GRE, UPSC, etc. The chances of clearing these entrance examinations are higher here than other IITs because one gets more free time in IIT-BHU and can spend more time in personal development. This will help them in grabbing good jobs even without registering for placements.

Some non-core companies also present job offers that are open to all branches. These recruiters only look for a particular set of skills that one can acquire through online courses in their free time. Thus there are many opportunities for the students and it depends on the student how he/she grabs the opportunity

Should I take NIT Suratkal IT or IIT BHU metallurgy?

PG
Prajukta Ghose Posted On : April 6th, 2023
Studied at the Indian Institute of Technology Varanasi

If you're trying to decide between NIT Suratkal and IIT(BHU) Varanasi, here are some points to consider:

  • First, think about your interests. If you're interested in coding and tech, NIT Suratkal may be the better option for you.
  • However, if the branch isn't a major factor in your decision, you may want to consider IIT(BHU) Varanasi. The IIT brand and alumni network are both very strong, and the Metallurgy Department at IIT(BHU) is one of the best and oldest in India.
  • That being said, if job placements are a top priority for you, it's worth noting that Metallurgy may not be the best choice in terms of placement opportunities. Only a few core companies come to IIT(BHU) Varanasi to recruit metallurgy students, and the packages they offer are often below average. Other students end up being placed in non-core sectors, like consulting and analytics.
  • On the other hand, while NIT Suratkal IT may not offer the best placement packages either, you'll likely have more opportunities in the field of IT, which you'll have studied in college.
  • Another advantage of IIT(BHU) Varanasi is the potential for higher studies opportunities. You'll have plenty of time to prepare for exams like CAT, GRE, GMAT, and even IAS if you're interested.
  • Finally, if you're willing to put in the work during your first semester at IIT(BHU) Varanasi, you can start off in Metallurgy and then switch to a different branch with better opportunities later on.

Consider your interests and priorities when making your decision. If coding and tech excite you, go for NIT Suratkal. But if you're looking for a strong alumni network and potential for higher studies opportunities, IIT(BHU) Varanasi may be the better choice.

IIT BHU and IIT Bhubaneswar both are good choices to pursue Metallurgical Engineering from.

IIT BHU is an old IIT with a good reputation. According to the National Institutional Ranking Framework 2019, IIT BHU ranks at 14. This IIT holds a good placement record for all the branches of engineering. The placement statistics of 2019, 72% of the students from Metallurgical Engineering got a placement offer.

Despite being a new IIT, IIT Bhubaneswar is doing quite well in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering. This department has witnessed 90% placement record in the year 2019. Also, according to the NIRF 2019, IIT Bhubaneswar is ranked at 26, which is quite impressive considering this IIT was established only in 2008.

M.Tech Mechanical Engineering DesignIndian Institute of Technology Bhubaneswar (2018)

From an academic point of view, the Metallurgy department provides great opportunities, industry exposure, good placement opportunities, and so on. There are many other reasons you can find relevant to consider it.

  1. IIT Bhubaneswar has experienced professors from the respective background. There is also a good Student-Teachers ratio in the metallurgy department.
  2. IIT BBS has furnished and well-equipped labs fit for research. As Orissa is famous for minerals, you will get many chances for field trips too. This will provide you with practical experiences.
  3. During the 2019 campus placement,  90% of students from the metallurgy department got placed. The average salary package offered was around 11.4 LPA. In the past, many graduates have got a good salary package and got the chance to work abroad.

Which would be better, metallurgy or biotechnology in NIT Durgapur or metallurgy or mining in IIEST Shibpur?

CJ
Chirag Jain Posted On : September 17th, 2020
B.Tech from Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur (2021)

NIT Durgapur and IIEST Shibpur both are excellent universities for pursuing Bachelor's and Master's in Engineering. Both institutes are located in different parts of West Bengal in famous areas. NIT Durgapur has been ranked and 46th in Engineering Category by the NIRF Rankings in India. It does carry a reputation value to the degree by being a premier institute of Engineering. IIEST is a lesser-known institute but well advanced in their research faculty and content.

In a nutshell:

Colleges

Admission

Placements

Tuition fee

NIT Durgapur

JEE Main

70%

1,49,100

IIEST Shibpur

JEE Main

Metallurgy: 68.6%

Mining: 80.1%

1,37,000

Courses:

  • Metallurgy or Biotechnology at NIT can only be selected after the first year depending on the marks scored by the candidate. Since it is a premier institute, it will be relatively difficult to get the subject of your choice.
  • At IIEST, metallurgy is offered in B.Tech however, mining engineering is only offered in the dual program of B.Tech + M.Tech. Thus students who wish to pursue mining engineering at IIEST Shibpur will have to go for the dual degree program.

Admission:

Admission at NIT would be much more competitive than IIEST. It requires a higher JEE mains rank. The choice of the subject involves even more competitiveness as it is done at the end of the first year based on CGPA. Most students who get selected at NIT do not wish to go for metallurgy, however, if you are interested, then it is one of the best institutes. IIEST is relatively easy when it comes to admissions and choice of subjects.

Placements:

  • At IIEST metallurgy and mining are considered as research-based subjects and thus do not have high paid placements at the start. However, the mining course does offer better placements and opportunities to study at other premium and specific institutes in India which can land a good job in the future.
  • NIT Durgapur, on the other hand, can provide better placements due to its reputation standard.

The B.Tech. program at IIEST may not hold much value, but it is supplemented by excellent research professors who encourage students to take part in national missions and research projects. The competitiveness at NIT won’t provide that opportunity to every student.

Which is the best choice, metallurgical engineering at NIT Jamshedpur, NIT Jaipur/Rourkela, or IIEST?

AC
Arindam Chakraborty Posted On : May 3rd, 2021
B.Tech from National Institute of Technology, Jamshedpur (2019)

Considering this question, it can be mentioned that if you want the best institute, then opt for NIT Rourkela. Besides, if you want to be engaged in other things besides study, then NIT Jamshedpur is the best choice. This is because the students of this institute get a huge time to think about their dreams.

However, my friends personally do not have much idea considering IIEST, so he told me some facts which may be helpful for the student to understand their best choice.

  • My friend is from NIT Jamshedpur, and he once told me that he represented the institute in the inter NIT Volleyball competition in NIT Surathkal in the year 2017. This institute is considered one of the best NIT in India.
  • Another interesting thing is that only 4 students among the total students got jobs in the core companies. My friend has heard this from one of the students of NIT Surathkal.
  • Concerning this, NIT Jamshedpur is far better.

In the following, some facts are tabulated considering the placement facts of these three institutes.

Criteria

NIT Jamshedpur

NIT Rourkela

IIEST

Highest CTC

30 LPA

42 LPA

39 LPA

Lowest CTC

4 LPA

3 LPA

10-15 LPA

Average CTC

12 LPA

10 LPA

5-8 LPA

Placement Stats

90 %

However, it is completely the personal opinion of my friends, and the decision may vary from person to person. So, you must take your decision very wisely, considering your future perspectives.

Is it possible for an IIT Roorkee metallurgy student to change branch to mechanical?

SG
Shruti Gupta Posted On : April 14th, 2023
Studied at Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee (2020)

Yes, It certainly is possible for an IIT Roorkee metallurgy student to change his branch to Mechanical.

In fact, based on recent stats, the metallurgy branch has the highest number of students opting for a branch change around 16 students out of 36 branch changers. Yet, I would like to bring to light the fact that IIT Roorkee has a bit of a complex branch change policy in comparison to other IITs.

  • The availability of seats for branch change intake is low around 2-3 only. This also includes seats for the reserved categories.
  • The CGPA required for branch change is very high due to less availability of seats. To get a branch change into CSE, one needs around 10 CGPA, for Electrical and ECE, one needs 9.7+ while other branches require around 9.4+ CGPA.
  • Lastly, branch change in IIT Roorkee takes place right after the first semester giving you less time to excel in adjusting alongside adjusting to your new life. You don’t have a second chance to score better in the second semester to compensate for the low marks in the first.

Although branch change at IIT Roorkee might seem difficult, with the right mindset and determination one can surely get into his preferred branch.
