You need to have a high CGPA to change your branch at PEC Chandigarh. The branch change or branch upgradation option is given after the first year. The rules of branch change are as follows.

  • The availability of branch change options depends on the vacancies.
  • Students are required to have a minimum of 8 CGPA, to apply for branch change. However, the actual required CGPA varies depending on the branch and competition. In recent years, the CGPA required for CSE was 10. For Mechanical and Electrical, the cutoff CGPA was ~ 8.25.

CGPA requirement for CSE usually stays high. Upgradation to ECE, Mechanical or Electrical is comparably easier.

One of my cousins got admission to Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh. Due to his low rank, he got admitted into civil engineering and thought to upgrade to mechanical in the second year. However, it was not an easy thing to do.

You are required to score 9 CGPA for changing branches in PEC. You will then only be eligible to fill the form. Also, the branch should have enough vacant seats to fill new students.

There are lots of students who want to change their branch after first year PEC, so it was a competition to get a new branch.

Following things should be kept in mind that will help change the branch easily.

  1. Never get a B in any subject. For that, you have to study hard.
  2. Keep a record of CGPA of other students who want to change their branch, and know which branch they want.
  3. Don’t waste your first-year time by joining any club.
  4. Keep eyes on the number of seats vacant in the desired branch you want and on students who also want to change their branch.

If two students get the same grade, then the allotment is done on the basis of AIEEE rank.

In my friend’s case, he stood on number three between two students who wanted a Mechanical branch too. And there were only two vacant seats in the Mechanical branch. Luckily for him, two students left the branch for another option by signing the NOC form.

Therefore, changing branches in Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh depends on the hard work you do. It requires willpower, competitiveness, and hard work.
