NCERT books are a good place to start the preparation for Organic Chemistry. But you shouldn’t rely on NCERT solely. Once you are through NCERT books, study standard reference books such as O.P. Tandon & A.K. Virmani, and Himanshu Pandey.

Organic Chemistry is extensive and NCERT books usually cover only the basic formulas. It’s good for clearing concepts but you will fall behind in competition if you are only following NCERT.

If JEE Main is your target then it is better you go by NCERT. Practice and learn from it as much as you can. You can make learning charts of various conversions, notes, etc.

Follow the NCERT of classes XI and XII both. This will help to score more than 70–75% in Organic Chemistry.

To improve this percentage you can practice question banks and previous years papers. Solving NCERT Exemplar would be an added advantage.

NCERT is a good place to start, but after going through them you can go for other books. Organic chemistry is an extensive part of chemistry and you would be behind your competition if you just studied NCERT.

Therefore it is recommended that you also follow: O.P. Tandon & A.K. Virmani and Himanshu Pandey.
