CAT examination itself isn’t tough. The competition and the hype created for the examination is the reason people perceive the examination as difficult. CAT syllabus is pretty straightforward. The examination has basic Maths and English questions. It usually has old-fashioned MCQ questions for the most part.

The competition part does make matters a bit complicated. Around 2 lakh people take CAT each year. Only around 40% of the students taking the test, prepare seriously for it.

Including the top 25 B-schools of India, there are around 10,000 decent seats.

So around 80,000 students or so compete for around 10,000 seats. So, the chance of securing a seat is 1 in 8.

According to the information online, CAT exams are not generally tough, but there are certain factors like the preparation, the competition, the approach towards the exam, etc. that makes it quite difficult. If you have a proper knowledge of current affairs and general knowledge with good aptitude skills and logical reasoning, you can easily ace the test.

Here are some points you can follow for a better understanding:

  • Read newspapers daily, as they make you familiar with a diverse range of topics. Also it improves your comprehension and retention ability.
  • Start focusing more on mental maths. Practice sudoku, puzzles, riddles, etc. to challenge your mind to solve them in a limited time.
  • Start maintaining a schedule. It will help you divide your strengths and weaknesses about the topics and plan to act on them accordingly.
  • Do as many revisions as possible. This will familiarize you with the pattern and the topics, which during the exam will become easier to approach.

Lastly, also take up mock tests, try solving them in a limited time. Interact with the people who have taken CAT and learn from their experiences. This will also give you a break from the rigorous preparation for the exam.
