Which has a better campus: the IIM Ahmedabad or the IIT Bombay?

DK
Devendra Kumar Posted On : February 27th, 2023
P.G.D.M from T. A. Pai Management Institute (Graduated 2018)

It is a no-brainer that IIM Ahmedabad is considered one of the finest institutes in terms of infrastructure in the whole of India. In fact, its campus excellency is what made it the shoot location of the Bollywood movie 2 States. It stands better even when compared to one of the best technological institutes IIT Bombay. The main areas where it gives an edge to IIT Bombay are its hostel facilities and supporting infrastructure. For instance

  • Every 8 students have 3 bathroom facilities
  • Students get single occupancy rooms
  • Every room has a small balcony, a big study table, and built-in bookshelves
  • Every hostel has 40 rooms with 3-4 washing machines and few refrigerators.
  • Free 24/7 Wi-Fi facilities within campus

The overall ambiance of the hostels installs a sense of comfort and productivity among the students.

IIT Bombay campus also has several aspects where it gives an edge to IIM Ahmedabad. For instance

  • Its campus is considered much more beautiful and green
  • It has top-notch amenities and recreational facilities
  • It is even considered bigger in size than IIM Ahmedabad
  • It has 2 natural lakes and a number of cliffs within the campus.

All this makes the IIT Bombay campus one of the best in the country. We can conclude that both campuses are excellent in their own parameters. While IIT Ahmedabad offers the best hostel facilities, IIT Bombay has the best campus ambiance.

How much are you earning after graduating from IIT Bombay?

AB
Advaith Bhaskar Posted On : March 18th, 2023
Lives in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India (2000–present)

My sister is an IITian however she completed her Engineering from IIT Roorkee instead and not from IIT Bombay. Due to her average JEE Rank, she was admitted to Pulp and Paper Engineering branch only. Only later did she realize that high packages are reserved for very few people, The cream of the batch. Your branch and CGPA largely determine your package.

She faced a terrible situation during her placements. Not even below-average companies considered Pulp and Paper Engineering students. Owing to her interest in Programming, she was offered a job by Patni Computers at 3.6 LPA but with a 2-year bond of Rs. 75,000 (which required you to pay before joining as security). This seemed a bit odd and she decided to join an educational start-up that offered the same package without the bond. Most of her peers had much better packages on hand.

Today, she earns 12 times what she earned during that time and her income is at the same level as those of her peers. Even today she gets offers from people to consider moving to another more established startup at a 50% hike in salary.

Some very important lessons to learn from this are

  • Your first job does not define your success and is only a stepping stone to achieving so much more.
  • The area you choose in the first year does not define your career at all.
  • Find what exactly you love doing and are good at
  • The first job is not a measure of success or your abilities. It’s just an experiment to discover what exactly you are passionate about.
  • Your CGPA does not matter after your first job.

Go explore, and wait for years until you are successful.

Why should someone choose IIT Delhi over IIT Mumbai for CSE? Except his/her AIR.?

RR
Riya Radhera Posted On : April 1st, 2023
Works at Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi

There are two sides to every coin. Similarly, there are many reasons why one must choose IIT Delhi over IIT Mumbai and vice versa. To make it further understandable, I have listed some common pros and cons of IIT Delhi

Pros

  • You are in proximity to the capital city
  • It’s easy to prepare for some other exams also apart from Engineering like IAS
  • Hauz Khas village in itself is an absolute treat to the eyes
  • Being in Delhi makes it possible to go for road trips to Jaipur, Chandigarh, Lansdown, Rishikesh, Dehradun, Agra, etc.
  • The Delhi Metro makes commuting quiet easy
  • There are many places to explore and hang out with your friends in the vicinity of the campus.

Cons

  • CS department of IIT Bombay is way better than IIT Delhi offering a plethora of diverse courses.
  • The campus of IIT Bombay has more natural landscape and greenery in comparison to IIT Delhi. This enhances the climate and overall ambiance inside the campus
  • Unlike IIT Delhi, the hostel facilities are much better at IIT Bombay while Delhi hostels are overly crowded.
  • Delhi faces extreme climatic conditions whereas the weather of IIT Bombay somehow remains the same throughout the year.

I leave it to you to weigh the pros and cons accordingly and make an informed decision.

What are the total fees for an MTech in IIT Bombay?

SB
Sumit Bose Posted On : March 21st, 2023
IIT Bombay (2019)

Admission to MTech students is given under 3 categories at IIT Bombay.

  • TA (Teaching Assistantship)
  • RA (Research Assistantship)
  • Sponsored Candidates

Teaching Assistantship

The fees for the first semester is higher than that of other semesters. The estimate is around 50-60k and includes everything; tuition, hostel, and mess. The table below shows the IIT Bombay MTech fees structure (2022) for the first semester only

Total M.Tech Fee for General/EWS OBC Category

Concessional Tuition Fee - 20,250 Per

Semester

Non- concessionalTuition Fee -

Fee: Rs. 40,250 Per Semester

Total M.Tech Fee for SC/ ST Category

Rs. 15,250 Per Semester

Second and third-semester fees are comparatively lower but the final semester fees rise again mainly due to placement fees and convocation fees.

Hostel Fees: IIT Bombay hostel fee is INR 34,050 which includes Mess caution money, Hostel seat rent, Electricity & water charges, and Mess advance. Thus the total MTech fees remain anywhere between INR 180000 to INR 200000.

If you think this fee is high then here is an important piece of information for you.

TA students get a stipend of around INR 12,400 every month i.e INR 74,400 per semester, which is much better than per semester fee. In 2 years, the student gets roughly INR 2,88,000.

Research Assistantship: Fees for the RA category are different. The duration of MTech for RA students is 3 years and they also get a stipend.

Sponsored category: The fees for these students are the highest and they do not get any stipend as they are sponsored by a company.

How much are the living expenses and the fees at IIT Bombay for an M.Tech?

AT
Adwait Tejas Posted On : March 18th, 2023
studied Aerospace and Aeronautical Engineering at Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (2021)

The detailed fee structure of IIT Bombay is as follows

Particulars

Data

Yearly Fees

INR 54600

Hostel Fees

17.25k/- year

Unless you study in an IIT, you will never understand how much the Government invests in an IITian. The semester fees along with hostel fees are more than 20-30k.

The students who got admission through GATE, receive a monthly stipend of around 15k which compensates for the meager fees spent. You can spend the rest of the money on your expenses. Moreover, all the essential commodities are made available on campus that too at reasonable rates. So one can even say that you are studying free of cost with money from the tax-paying public.

Why do most toppers prefer IIT Bombay rather than other top IITs?

AT
Adwait Tejas Posted On : March 17th, 2023
studied Aerospace and Aeronautical Engineering at Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (2021)

Many people tend to emulate the actions of others without much thought or consideration, but you should not be one of them. Choosing IIT Bombay just because others are doing so may not be the best decision for you. However, if you want to join the best institute for your field of study, IIT Bombay is a great choice.

Earlier, students blindly used to follow others to join IIT Kanpur. But now, IIT Bombay is the preferred choice. This is because the best students prefer IIT Bombay over other IITs. As a result, the top companies also prefer to hire students from IIT Bombay, which further improves its statistics, making it even more attractive to the best students.

Apart from that, one of the reasons for choosing IIT Bombay is the presence of the best faculty. The best faculties are attracted more towards IIT Bombay (and then IIT Delhi) because these cities have the best urban infrastructure for their families and children. They also get more consulting and teaching assignments from outside, which enhances their income since the salaries of all IITs are the same. Most professors are reluctant to go to small cities like Kanpur or Kharagpur and prefer Delhi and Mumbai.

Therefore, if you are looking for the best institute for your field of study, and if you value the presence of the best faculty, then IIT Bombay would be an excellent choice for you.

How can we get internships at IIT Bombay?

HS
Hamza Shabir Posted On : March 13th, 2023
M.Tech in Electronic Systems, Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IITB) (Graduated 2014)

If you are a B.Tech 3rd-year student (or even in 2nd year) and you want to apply for an internship at IIT Bombay, the best way to do it is by contacting the professor. You need to follow certain steps to apply for the internship:

  • Identify the area you want to work on. Make sure you have a good interest in the area, good knowledge of what is currently happening in your area of interest, a good grade in the subject, and a decent CGPA (or percent marks).
  • Go through the website of IITB and the corresponding department. The website lists details of all the professors, their contact and the area of research. Identify the professor who is doing work in your area of interest.
  • Prepare a good resume highlighting what you have achieved in the area you want to work on. If you are in the early or middle years of B.Tech you might not have too much to highlight on. In those cases, you can mention the good grades you got in the subject you want to work on. Even a seminar or presentation that you have taken related to the area will be a plus.
  • Draft and send a mail to the professor. The mail should be catchy, crisp, and to the point. Don’t write too many and don’t write too less. Highlight what you want to do, why you want to do and what have you done so far. Attach your resume also. The professor may not reply to you for the first time. You can send a reminder mail maybe a week later. Even after sending a couple of emails if there is no reply, try calling. (Be careful here. Some professors don’t like directly calling them. You can call some of his students doing research under him and inquire. Normally his student details will also be on the website).
  • Once you come under the notice of the professor, he might or might not have a phone interview and ask you to come as an intern depending on your performance.
  • You need to get the consent of your college to do the internship at IITB. You can ask the professor about the formalities for it.

Though it seems simple to read, it will take a considerable amount of time, particularly finding a good professor. So, if you want to do an internship six months from now, you should start as soon as possible. You can always take the help of the faculties in your current B.Tech college. If there is any faculty who has direct contact with any of the professors in IITB, that will be the best way.

You can bypass all the above steps by getting a recommendation from the faculty. If you successfully complete an internship, it will make the professor happy, and he might be willing to give a recommendation letter, which is very valuable for your higher studies.
