Is it worth doing a BTech in biotechnology from Thapar University, or should I prefer a government college like UIET Chandigarh? What are the placement records of biotechnology students at Thapar?

AS
Arnav Singh Posted On : May 26th, 2021
BTech Computer Science Engineering, Panjab University, Chandigarh (2020)

If you have a keen interest in biotechnology, then B.Tech in Biotechnology is an excellent field. But if you aren’t interested in the branch it will be better to go for other branches. I have friends from both institutes. Here are some of the facts about the Biotech course at both institutes based on the interactions I had with them.

Comparison:

  • Biotech from UIET Chandigarh is decent, but the placement opportunities are limited. But if you have a good academic record then you can go for higher studies at Panjab University which has a good industry interface with Sun Pharma.
  • Panjab University holds a better international reputation than Thapar University. It will help you sail through the admission process in a leading foreign institute for further education in biotech.
  • The crowd in UIET Chandigarh is better than Thapar University. The reason is, UIET requires to require a less JEE Mains cut-off rank as compared to Thapar.
  • Thapar is a private university. So, it has the edge over the placements compared to UIET Chandigarh. Being a private institution it charges a massive fee as compared to UIET Chandigarh.
  • Thapar has a tie-up Trinity College, Dublin, so you get an opportunity to do (2+2), i.e., two years at Thapar and two years at Trinity. This program can hike the fee up to INR 40-45 Lakhs.

Before joining, it will be better to have a conversation with the students on campus to have a wholesome knowledge about the institutes.

Can I get into UIET Chandigarh with a JEE Main rank of 74,000?

AH
Akshay Harshvardhan Posted On : May 31st, 2021
B.E. Computer Science, University Institute of Engineering and Technology, Panjab University (2019)

Yes, you might be able to get into UIET Chandigarh with a JEE Main rank of 74,000. The most likely branch that you will get into as a general category is ECE, EEE, or Mechanical. Things will change if you belong to a reserved category student and you might be able to score a seat in CSE.

Here is the latest required cutoff for UIET.

Course

General Cutoff

CSE

945-24246

6037-46660

IT

24265-35348

47120-57861

ECE

25258-42196

61291-72506

EEE

25564-51542

58269-73014

Mechanical Engineering

30059-56234

72430-84878

Biotechnology

51181-85699

90951-124482

Based on this ranking, the hostel is only allocated in biotechnology and engineering without the hostel in Chandigarh is costly, so try to get into the hostel. Other than this, some private hostels will give you everything essential, but they come at a huge cost.

How difficult or easy is it for a student of UIET Chandigarh to upgrade his branch after 1st semester?

AS
Amrita Sukhani Posted On : June 9th, 2021
Studied MBA in Symbiosis Hyderabad (2019)

My cousin used to be a student of UIET Chandigarh. According to him, getting into the institute is not that difficult if you have the will and drive to succeed. Some of the ways you can get admission are:

  • Networking with the seniors instead of getting carried away by the elections can go a long way. You can ask them about the patterns of the examinations and the books which they took the help of for the same.
  • Look for the syllabus and the list of books required for your course. Conduct research and collect all the source material you think is essential for your curriculum.
  • Consistency is of utmost importance. No success can be achieved without unwavering commitment.
  • You can refer to the notes given to you in class for minors and for majors. Study according to the topic given in the syllabus.
  • It goes without saying that solving the question papers of the previous years also helps a lot in getting acquainted with the process of the examinations.

Also, do not follow these steps for all the semesters as you will be given the capability to move beyond academics after your branch gets upgraded. There is a lot going in and around the campus.

How is the EEE branch at the UIET Chandigarh?

PK
Pranav Kumar Posted On : May 24th, 2021
BE CSE, UIET Chandigarh (2018)

A good friend of mine has pursued EEE in UIET from Chandigarh. I reached out to him to catch up with some details and the latest facts.

If you are wanting to go for IT/CSE- UIET, Chandigarh is a great choice. But if you want to pursue EEE at UIET, then it is not a good choice. If we talk about the placement scenario over there, barely one or two core companies show up for that. A bunch of candidates ends up getting placed in the IT sector- which isn't worth it.

Here are the recent placement statistics for the EEE branch at UIET.

Average CTC

6.5 LPA

Highest CTC

28 LPA

Opting for any other engineering college would be a better choice if you want to go for EEE. But then, if you have decided to strictly adhere to UIET, perhaps check out other branches like Chemical Engineering, CSE as they come along with a fine set of faculty and better placement stats.

I might not have appropriate information on GTBIT (IPU) but one of my cousins studied at UIET Chandigarh. So, I will be able to give you some information about UIET.

He also was a CSE graduate, and according to him, CSE is quite good there. Though he is a bit unsure about the placements nowadays due to the Covid-19 outbreak.

Other than that, in terms of infrastructure, faculty, academics, and reputation UIET is really up to the mark. They also encourage students to participate in seminars, industry visits, and internships. It will give you enough exposure and an understanding of the corporate world.

B.E. Mech Engg. from University Institute of Engineering and Technology, Panjab University (Graduated 2019)

Mechanical Engineering and Computer Science are two completely different fields. Rather than a brand name, you should choose a branch based on your interests. A bright future requires you to be happy, which requires you to work on projects that you enjoy.

According to reports, NIT Jalandhar is a good institute. The CSE program at UIET Chandigarh is unquestionably excellent.

How is mechanical engineering in UIET Chandigarh?

SS
Shubham Srivastav Posted On : June 19th, 2021
BE Computer Science Engineering, University Institute of Engineering and Technology, Panjab University (2019)

Mechanical branch in UIET Chandigarh is a good decision but it comes with a drawback. My cousin just completed his B.Tech from this institute and according to him, the following are some of the insights.

  • The professors are well qualified and quite regular. You will be well guided throughout your journey.
  • You can take part in various mechanical events like Efficars and EFFicycles.
  • Regarding campus placements, many mass recruiters visit the campus such as Infosys, TCS, etc.
  • One notable thing at UIET is that many of the students prefer to go for higher education after completing their B.Tech. Also, some of my cousin’s seniors bagged top ranks in AIR GATE!

However, the placement is much better for subjects like IT, CSE, and ECE. This is because Not too many core mechanical companies visit UIET and many non-technical companies don't allow mechanical and electrical students to sit in their placements as they look for coding experience.

Which one is a better option, biotechnology from UIET (Chandigarh) or food technology from UICET (Chandigarh)?

IN
Indranil Nair Posted On : June 16th, 2021
B.E. Mechanical Engineering, University Institute of Engineering and Technology, Panjab University (2020)

Food technology from UICET Chandigarh will be a better option for you. It has better scope in the future as compared to other streams.

The reason for choosing UICET is as follows:

  1. Placements: Around 70% of students got placed in Food Technology. The highest CTC offered was INR 10 LPA, the average CTC was INR 5.5 LPA and the lowest CTC was INR 3.5 LPA. Top recruiting companies like HPCL, Reliance, and Pepsi came for the campus placements. More than 50 companies visited the campus.
  2. Brand name: This college has got a great brand name because UICET is a part of Punjab University and is the oldest department while the UIET is a newly founded department. You will find a lot of alumni in this college for better guidance who are from the food technology field.
  3. Research work: This college also provides research work to undergraduate students. You can take the research work from the assistant professors. Many students do their research from outside organizations as well.
  4. Fees: The annual fees at UICET are INR 18000 per annum as this is a government-funded course. If you study biotechnology from UIET then the fees would be INR 80,000 per annum.

Food tech students are even getting preferences in IIM Ahmedabad and IIM Lucknow. Most of the students from this college are also going to Canada to pursue MS.

How are the hostels allotted in UIET Chandigarh?

SS
Shekhar Suman Posted On : May 28th, 2021
Bachelor in Engineering Electronics and Communication Engineering, UIET (2018)

Applications for hostels are submitted at the time of physical reporting. Filling up the forms is done during the counseling. It hardly takes 2-3 days till the final list of hostel allotments is verified and notified.

Following are the criteria needed to be met:

  • You will get a sit on the basis of your rank and category (SC, ST, EWS, Others). Last rankers do not get hostel even in the final year.
  • Every stream is provided with equal seats. The lower your rank, the higher your preference you receive.
  • Quota (SC, ST, OBC) plays an important role in your preference over non- quotas.
  • Political help can also work. You can put your issues out to some party and they would willingly help you in getting into the hostel.
  • You can stay on a guest basis but you will have to pay more than the actual residents.

You’ll get to know if you have your hostel allocated or not by UIET’s official site. The allocation list is uploaded after every round.
