What is the most stupid thing you have heard in a BIT Mesra classroom?

DD
Deepika Dubey Posted On : April 23rd, 2021
B.E in Electrical & Electronics Engineering (EEE), BIT, Mesra, Graduated 2019

My friend was a student of BIT Mesra and he has told me his share of funny stories from the institute. He used to make us laugh by telling us about the things he’d heard while he was still a student.

Following are the statements of the highly regarded “R.K. Narayan” of the institution

  • He had no idea that he was slowly becoming the hero of Ranchi. He said that a lot of people used to come to his lectures and a revolution started no matter wherever he went.
  • Russian and US had a hand behind Spain’s Euro 2012 victory. They wanted Italy to lose in the final so that petrol rates go down in India.
  • M.S. Dhoni reminded him of himself. He said that like Dhoni, he was also never afraid to take his shots. “R.K.” said that he let others get to him when he should have let his cricket do the talking.
  • During a power cur in class, he said that the US was conspiring against him.
  • For more than a week at the start of every semester, he describes himself as the main bone of contention between the USSR and the US.

Another thing he used to tell us was how he had strong wrists and used to demonstrate how to hit a six. He said M.S. Dhoni’s style of hitting a six is similar to “R.K.”s.

How is life at BIT mesra? How is the mess food, campus, hostel, and people around?

SJ
Shekhar Jha Posted On : April 15th, 2021
BE, Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra (2018)

BIT Mesra is a fairly well-known university, especially among the academic intellectuals, with a rich history of many notable alumni. However, except for the people residing in the states of Jharkhand, Bihar, and some parts of West Bengal and Odisha, it is not very popular among the common people in the rest of the country.

The hostels and the mess food can be considered decent and the rooms are well-maintained. Life at the campus is okay, nothing to complain about. Some of the features which may be considered a pro or a con depending upon the person are as follows.

  • Boys get single accommodation from the first year itself while the same is not true for girls; they get shared accommodation till they pass out. The girl’s hostels are also a lot stricter than the boy’s hostels with the students needed to check-in at the hostel before the sunsets.
  • There are lots of clubs and societies to get involved with depending upon your level of interest; dancing, literature, debating, and music, etc. to name a few.
  • The schedule is not very hectic. You will not be over-burdened with projects, assignments, and reports which are not required.
  • Ranchi, though a good city, is not a metro city and you will not find clubs or discos to hang out with friends at the weekends. Instead, you will enjoy the soothing sunsets sitting in the campus gardens.

Finally, though placements and the fee are not part of the everyday life of a student, they both affect the mental life of a student in a big way; so worth mentioning. If you are from a CSE/IT/Mechanical/EEE/Production engineering branch, you will receive good placements with many top companies visiting the campus. Whereas branches such as Biotech, Chemical, Polymer engineering have very low packages at campus placements and many also remain unplaced at core companies. The fee is also higher than many state colleges and NITs as it is a private university.

If you can cope up with these things and do not have any other higher-ranked college, BIT Mesra will be a good option for you and it will offer you a good and balanced life.

What is the toughest thing to do at BIT Mesra?

UP
Utsav Patranabish Posted On : April 15th, 2021
BE, BIT Mesra

The list below will give you some of the toughest things to do at BIT Mesra.

Mess food:

  • It is below par, to say the least, and one of the worst things about the hostel life at BIT Mesra. Staying healthy and not getting malnourished is the toughest task here.
  • The water used for cooking or drinking in the mess is unhygienic and getting typhoid is as common as catching a common cold and cough.
  • The food is also of very substandard quality and it is safe to say that if you are healthy enough and you want to shed some weight, then eating the mess food is more than enough to do that without needing a gym subscription.

Classes –

  • The classes are good until you use your logical sense of what some of the professors are teaching.
  • No doubt many professors are really knowledgeable, but there are some who will put up the classes with zero logic. You will not be able to question them.
  • Questioning them or putting up some genuine logic and reasoning becomes a task here.

Dispensary – Getting good medicine from the institute’s dispensary is a task in itself. The doctor will prescribe you the same medicine for every disease.

Administration – Getting a day or a half-day off for college fests or even a simple signature on your document will take your full day with running this department to that. Even after such a long ordeal, your work may not get accomplished.

The list may increase depending upon each student’s experience. But these are some of the common things which can make your life difficult at BIT Mesra.

What is the best advice a senior gave you at BIT Mesra?

RP
Rishabh Pant Posted On : May 10th, 2021
Studied B.Com from Delhi University

My brother is from BIT Mesra, so I think I can help you by answering this.

  • The most common mistake that first-year students make is joining several of the clubs in the mistaken belief that these decisions would pay off in the long run.
  • My brother was fortunate to have a senior who advised him not to join these clubs, but instead to seek out clubs such as ACM, IEI, UNESCO, and others that have minimal politics and invited students to join the club based on their performance in the various activities of the club.
  • As a CSE student, he followed and participated in ACM activities religiously. This not only helped him improve himself, but it also gave him the self-belief and confidence that everyone needs to succeed in their professional life.

The same senior advised him to maintain a good CGPA throughout the academic year. He also asked him to practice coding.

In short, ACM and/or open-source stuff is the way to go for a CSE guy.

Does BIT Mesra have a management quota?

VA
Varda Ahmed Posted On : May 10th, 2021
Sociology honours from Jamia University

My sister is from BIT Mesra, and I am quite aware of the situation here. There is no such thing as a management quota at BIT Mesra.

Every year, rumors spread about this, but later it is discovered that all the rumors were false. You can go to college by yourself to check this out. This will also give you a clear idea of what you are gonna have for the few most important years of your life.

However, there is only one reservation for BC-I and BC-II students from the state of Jharkhand. More information about this reservation quota can be found on the college's website.

How is BIT MESRA? Is it equal to IIT OR NIT?

SS
Shubham Saxena Posted On : May 10th, 2021
B.Tech from Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra (2022)

In terms of comparison with IITs and NITs, it cannot be compared to the top IITs and a few NITs comprising the top four or five. Following that, it is a strict University that strives to produce industry-ready graduates.

According to the NIRF 2020 Rankings of Educational Institutions, which were measured by the Government of India itself, BIT Mesra received the following positions.

  • In Engineering, it is placed at 38th rank.
  • In Pharmacy, it made into 16th place.
  • In management, it is placed 58th.

Although it can't be compared to IITs, placements are quite good. An average salary of 11.76 LPA has been recorded while the highest package of 49.76 LPA has been offered.

Some professors are very friendly and have a lot to teach you. The hostel mess isn't all that bad and the weather is lovely there. It rains almost every day during the summer, and of course during the monsoon. Students do complain about some rules of the institute which seems unnecessary.

The biggest issue here is the lack of communication between students and the administration. But, in the end, when you pass out, these things don't matter and become a lifelong memory of which one can reminisce fondly.

Why is that BIT Mesra has not gained as much fame as BITS Pilani though it was setup before BITS, with good infrastructure?

KK
Khushi Kaur Posted On : May 10th, 2021
B.E Electronics and Communication Engineering, Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra (2018)

BITS Pilani is located in Rajasthan, which is and used to be a part of India's so-called active north. As a result, BIT Mesra is not preferred by the people of the north, who have better options of IITs and NITs. While some go for the south. It is only an ideal place for Bihar, Bengal, Orisha, Jharkhand, and the neighboring state.

BIT Mesra was ranked 7th by India Today Group Survey, but it remains isolated in terms of fame because students are the biggest marketer for a deemed institution. If you say, “Hey, I am from Bit Mesra,” the likely answer would be, “Is it a subsidiary unit of Bits Pilani?” As BITS Pilani is more reputed.

Here are a few other reasons why BIT Mesra has not gained much recognition among the students.

  • The kind of behavior carried or promoted among teachers is more akin to a school teacher, so the title professor is unnecessary.
  • The management approach at BIT is very bad; there is a lot of paperwork to be done for any minor thing. From the time you enroll until the day you leave the campus you will have to go through many paper works.
  • Off campuses are given no value by the main campus, and this is a major reason why BIT is not mentioned with off campuses. Whereas Pilani has four centers that are advertised, in very good condition, and are given true care by the Pilani main campus. This is a major reason why Pillani is more well-known than Mesra.
  • There is no student council or student politics, and no student welfare council composed of fellow students exists or is promoted.
  • Apart from these, the governor of Jharkhand, who is only present at convocations, is the chancellor of Mesra, while Pilani is completely managed by the Birlas, with MR Kumar Mangalam Birla as the chairman.
  • Another major reason for Pillani's success is the engineering entrance exam pattern. BIT Pilani organizes a separate exam called BIT SAT, whereas BIT Mesra does not take any separate exam.

This all that I have learned through my connections at the institutes. Hope this helps in clearing your doubts.

There are interesting interview stories that you will get to hear at BIT Mesra. From cell phone ringing during the interview to making a blunder during the coding round and still getting through the interview. One of my juniors from BIT Mesra had an interview with a valley-based start-up. It was scheduled at night due to the time gap. He fall asleep while waiting for the interview and woke up to a missed Skype call.

Whom do students from BIT Mesra look up to the most among their seniors (or alumni)?

KB
Kinshuk Bhaumik Posted On : April 17th, 2021
BIT Mesra (2018)

There are many successful alumni of BIT Mesra that students look up to.

Gaurav Roy-

  • He is one of the best coders that BIT Mesra has ever seen. He was part of the best counter-strike clan of BIT Mesra during his time.
  • He is also pretty down-to-earth and a lively person. He is now working with Amazon.

Many students went on for higher studies. They are a huge inspiration to the current students. Following is a very short list of seniors from batch 2k7 who went on to pursue their MS from top US universities.

  • Abhishek Sharma- MSS EE, Stanford, Computer Vision. He was a very famous figure in the workshop culture at BIT.
  • Siddharth G Menon- MS Mech, Univ Ann Arbor. He had a company with his brother when he was in high school. He also went on further and found another company specializing in Marine Technology in the US.
  • Str Bargav- MS ECE, CMU, Networking, Security.

You might not have heard much about these people on campus, but these people were an inspiration for their juniors and people looked up to them for their valuable advice.
