I have secured 2nd rank in the wait-listed candidates in the all-India general category. Will I get a seat at NERIST?
One of my friends took admission in NERIST. According to him, your luck will play a big part in bagging the seats. Students who have been far behind you in the waiting list ended up getting admission. Luck plays a major role because some students do not attend the counseling session which leaves some of the seats vacant.
- The process of selection is not that complicated.
- The candidates in the PRC ranking are allotted seats no matter what state they belong to.
- Everyone is assured of seats.
- In the case of agricultural engineering, a lot of people do not know about it so candidates who do, do end up getting seats.
- For NEE, there are probably 40 seats, 8 from the states of North East India including the All India quota and the PRC rank holders.
- So, four students for each group get their seats allotted to them and the PRC rank guarantees a student a seat in their own desired branch if the four seats have already been taken.
In the case of Arunachal Pradesh, however, the counseling session for the students belonging to that state is held on another day. So if a student does get a seat, it may not be the one they were looking for.
Why is biotechnology considered the worst branch in NIT Durgapur?
Here are some reasons why Biotechnology from NIT Durgapur isn’t a good choice-
- Like most Indian colleges, Biotechnology doesn’t receive ample attention from NIT Dgp administration. The department is underfunded, and understaffed, there isn’t proper space and the atmosphere is not ambient.
- The majority of Biotech teachers at NIT DGP aren’t good. They expect you to know and remember everything. Students with good pointers are treated fairly, while others become bad students without committing any mistakes.
- The academic section and placement cell have no proper communication in-between them. Students from Biotech don’t have proper interaction with other departments. No one wishes to bridge these gaps.
- When applying for foreign universities, you will be brainwashed on how you should intern at an Indian college.
- No core company visits the campus during the placement season. The only option left is mass recruiters. Many companies restrict only Biotech students from applying for a placement. Placement season is quite frustrating for Biotech students of NIT Durgapur.
Due to these reasons, pursuing a Biotech from NIT Durgapur might not be the right choice.
How will MDI Gurgaon be as a brand in the future compared to IIM?
MDI Gurgaon is considered at par with some and better than most of the IIM. Here are some reasons why:
- Improved Admission Process: MDI has improved its admission process over the years. Earlier, CAT scores were given more weightage, but now the institute has realized that it cannot be the sole selection criteria. More weightage is given to other parameters such as work experience, diverse industry experience, etc. This has improved the quality of incoming batches by leaps and bounds.
- Location: The institute is located in Gurgaon, which is a well-known business hub. This gives the institute an advantage in terms of industry connections and placement opportunities.
- Other successful programs: MDI offers a successful dedicated PGPHR program that ensures better industry contacts with people who really matter, in campus recruitment exercises. The institute also offers a lot of government-related programs, which help in establishing quality industry contacts and frees them from the burden of abiding by ever-changing HRD ministry moods and tantrums.
- Faculty: MDI has a large and experienced faculty. The institute delivers in terms of both numbers and quality. Gurgaon as a location again helps in terms of retiring with a career in academia and still staying in an urban setup, along with giving access to some quality consulting assignments.
However, MDI also struggles against issues like archaic institutional management practices, lack of modernization in terms of infrastructure, etc. These are common problems faced by most of the good institutions in the country. Despite these challenges, MDI has managed to establish itself as one of the top B-schools in India, and its reputation continues to grow.
How is CSE in MANIT Bhopal as I wish to join MANIT this year?
B.Tech CS offered by MANIT has its own cons. Here is some information about the same-
- The topics taught in first year are mostly non related to your branch. Pay attention to Programming and Communication Skills taught during this time.
- A lot of time is wasted in the labs, learning outdated topics.
- Around 20% of the syllabus is outdated, and students solely rely on coding for good job offers. Thus, most of them go into Soft Skills rather than R&D positions.
- Internet connectivity is crippled by throttling and capping in the hostels.
- The files and sessionals are copy pasted.
- CS students get tier-2 and 3 companies through campus placements. They jump into tier-1 companies after a while. So, even though there is 100% placement, the ground reality is a bit different.
The CSE offered at MANIT Bhopal is decent, and requires a lot of effort from your side. I would suggest you learn C programming language before joining the college.
What is the daily schedule of IISC Bangalore MS students?
The schedule is more or less the same for all postgraduate students at IISc.
Some are night owls, while others wake up early each morning. The mess opens between 7:30-9:30 am for breakfast. The classes commence at 8, and run till late the afternoon. So the early risers are the ones who eat their breakfast in the mess.
The schedule of postgraduates is quite hectic over here. Most of them work in the labs till night, after their classes. The canteen of IISc Bangalore is called Prakruti. It is where you’ll find students and professors enjoying their evening tea. It is also the place where geniuses sit and think upon mathematical problems.
Those who finish their work early opt for some outdoor activities in the evening. They play Hockey, TT, Lawn Tennis and Basketball in the Gymkhana. You can even find some professors over there. At night, some postgraduates go for night strolls post dinner, while others are busy working in the labs. Unlike the rest of the city that sleeps after 11pm, the IISc campus is awake at all hours.
This question does not have a single answer, so I tried answering for every kind of postgraduate student on this campus.
How is an MTech in civil engineering at IIT, Dhanbad?
IIT(ISM) Dhanbad has two branches in the Civil Engineering department namely Structural Engineering and Environmental Science and Engineering.
Structural Engineering has learned and experienced faculty but the infrastructure and lab facilities are still lacking. A few core companies like L&T come for recruitment drives. The workload is considered less so you will get ample amount of time for preparation for UPSC.
M.Tech in Environmental Science and Engineering is one of the oldest branches which is the Centre of Mining Environment. There are many highly qualified professors in this discipline with well-equipped laboratories certified by ISO. The department has more than 90 Research and Development projects and more than 250 consultancy.

I am currently pursuing 1st year B.tech (CSE) in NIT Raipur. Can I give JEE Mains next year and take admission in another NIT or IIIT?
Yes, you can surely attempt your JEE Mains/Advanced/BITS. Many students do the same. There are (and have been) at least 1 or 2 such students in every batch of NIT Raipur.
But I would advise you not to opt for just any other NIT. Choose an NIT which is at least 5-6 ranks above NIT Raipur. Otherwise, switching to another NIT will prove ineffective. The same goes for IIITs, choose only the old ones.
This is because NIT Raipur offers decent placements for CSE, at par with the NITs of the same stature. So wasting a year for NIT Jamshedpur or NIT Durgapur will be fruitless. If you go for JEE counseling, you’ll have to withdraw from your NIT Raipur seat first. To be on the safe side, go for the counseling only with a score high enough to get you CSE in a better ranking NIT. Otherwise, you might get NIT Raipur once again. This has happened with students in the past.
I hope this advice will help you make wise decisions regarding your college switch.
Is work experience an added advantage for admissions in NITIE?
There are a few possible outcomes of this. These will come with many advantages and let me discuss them below with you:
Advantages in your course curriculum: There are very less instances where this might happen as subjects are taught extremely well, right from the basics. For example, classes like operation research, statistics for management courses.
- Project management was a course taken in the first year. But, if you have work experience, you will have a basic idea about the class and understand faster. Similarly, if you have industry experience, you will learn about concepts easily.
- Keep in mind that this does not mean that freshers are at a loss. You can always ask the teacher to elaborate on an answer. The teachers will also give real-life cases which will help you. They are all experts in their domain. They are seasoned experts who regularly train industry professionals.
Advantage during placements: In this case, both parties are of the opinion that the other is better off. But you should know that this is completely up to you and placement reports are usually a good mix of freshers and experienced students.
- Having experience will not give you an edge as everyone starts from the same line. Two of my batch mates, one with experience and one without, got offers from the same company – Cognizant.
- But, Flipkart was one of the few companies recruiting students who had experience range from 12 months to 4 to 5 years.
As a fresher, you might face a few challenges in the first month or two. But, be patient. This does not put you at a disadvantage for the next two years. Everyone gets an equal opportunity so there is no advantage or disadvantage as such.
Should I go for NSIT IT or IIT Jammu Mechanical?
No matter what anyone says, one cannot underestimate the value an IIT tag holds in shaping your career and opening doors of opportunities you did not know existed. You will have a certain confidence over non-IITians and you will thus strive everywhere you go. Moreover, the quality and number of recruiters an IIT attracts is unmatched.
IT at NSUT Delhi won't do you much good because CSE has overtaken IT and is no longer the most coveted branch. The mechanical branch however still has its charm and will continue to do so in the future. So it's not advisable to join a branch that is losing its charm gradually. Here are some additional points to consider
- The campus facilities are also better at IIT obviously because it's a government college.
- Students have access to the internet 24/7 which is not possible in NSUT Delhi.
- IIT Jammu has amazing sports facilities like a cricket net, football ground, badminton courts, basketball court, table tennis room, volleyball court, chess, and carrom. There is also a TV room with all HD channels, for recreation.
- Students are offered laundry services too.
- Several cultural and technical clubs like drama, dance, literature, art, music, coding, robotics, etc. promote extracurricular activities largely.
The above points might have convinced you to choose IIT Jammu over NSIT.
Which is better MNIT JAIPUR or IIT JODHPUR?
Here are some pros of joining IIT Jodhpur-
- It offers higher packages and more exposure than MNIT.
- It carries the ‘IIT’ tag which will help you for your higher studies/career.
- An IIT offers you much more freedom to explore your interests and passions. You may end up in a non-engineering field post graduation and do wonders at it.
- You’ll thoroughly enjoy your four years at IIT Jodhpur with all the freedom and exposure given to you.
- The IIT Jodhpur campus is spread across 852 acres. You’ll get a single AC hostel room.
- Like every other college, you’ll get to choose from numerous societies and clubs like photography, quiz club, astronomy, programming, etc.
For placements, campus life, and exposure, IIT Jodhpur is a better choice than MNIT Jaipur. But you also need to consider the branch that you are getting at each of them.
