Topic: It Is Primarily Through Our Identification With Social Groups That We Define Ourselves GRE Issue Essay

Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the statement and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should consider ways in which the statement might or might not hold true and explain how these considerations shape your position.

Model Answer:

The social group refers to the group of people we mix with, to stay with. This social group helps a lot in identifying ourselves. The social groups that we belong to, also determine behaviour and character. Nowadays, it is not possible to decipher the inborn qualities and aspirations of a person individually. It can be easily deciphered from social interaction made within the social groups. The youngsters, take the decision regarding any important thing in their life, by discussing with the peer groups, or close friend circle.

Thus, the type of social group and the members in the social groups are very significant and play a significant role in the individual’s everyday life. It is so, because if the members of the peer group are good and mature, then they will be able to guide their mates in a better way. But if the members in the peer group are worthless, or have an immature mindset. Then the people in the social group will not be able to take up the correct decision through discussion within the peer group. Thus some of the important decisions are based on the social group in an individual’s life.

A person’s characteristics, beliefs, and features are that, which help him to distinguish himself from others, and also will help to identify how the person is. It further helps an unknown person to know your personality. It is very difficult to define a person or to say how he is. According to me, the definition of a person depends on the type of people he or she interacts with. But, superficially, we define ourselves with the social groups that we mix with. Thus, a deeper definition becomes explicit, giving importance to individual dual identity within a social group. Still, I do not agree with the fact that the definition of a person not only depends on social interaction with others. But also on the personal characteristics, with others, that make him different from the others. We, the people, are generally a small part of a social group. The social group to which we belong, can differentiate or make a distinction from the other group. In addition, those characteristics and features help in defining the individual’s personality. This is how an individual is defined in a superficial sense.

We can take an example, where an individual student visits abroad for an exchange program, where he refers to himself on the basis of his nationality. This represents the social group to which he belongs. Similarly, in the international beauty contest, there are participants from various countries. In addition, the participants are called by their nationality, like Miss Venezuela, Miss Africa, etc. It can also happen that an individual belongs to two social groups at the same time, for example, a persona can belong to the Hindu social group, as well as Indian. Belonging to a social group helps in identifying the similar characteristics of the within-group members. And dissimilar characteristics with the other groups or group members. It is important to distinguish a person from others, through the social groups that the person belongs to.

A true definition of a person should be, how he is, when he stands alone individually, without involving himself with any social group. This gives a detailed definition of a person. So, many gangs among the students are found, which are basically formed due to the like-minded thinking, among the classmates.

Thus social groups (peer groups) play a very important role in one’s life. And one chooses the respective social group, where all the members have the same mindset as the person in question. Thus, the social group that a person belongs to will be an identification for him.
