Dr. K C Manjunath is a Professor and Head of Civil Engineering Department in the National Institute of Engineering, Mysore. He has B.E. in Civil, M Tech, and Ph.D. He has more than 30 years of experience in the education sector.

What are your responsibilities towards the students in The National Institute of Engineering, Mysore?

My responsibility is to take the classes properly, and conduct lab classes. I always organize field trips and provide additional training to the students. They get counseling from faculty at essential instances. To look after the routine functioning of the department in a smooth way without any problem.


How do you tend to establish healthy relations with the students and fellow faculty? 

I consider the academic & administrative issues at the personnel level of every individual and try to solve the problems. I give much importance to mail, whatsApp messages and other communication routes. I will respond to them quickly and prefer personal interaction. Our campus also maintains reliable personal communication among all individuals. 


How do you try to bring in a practical approach towards subjects as industry oriented in The National Institute of Engineering, Mysore?

“Through Internships, industry exposure, field trips, and training to the students”

Some of the industry-oriented topics are included in the syllabus. We arrange the field trips, and have good interaction with a Builder’s Association of India and ACCE, Mysore Chapter. Industry experts give training to our students. They need to do internships at the final year of study. Moreover, we are doing consultancy work for various industries. We help our students to get internships in good industries through our personnel contacts.


What are the best practices offered by campus to the students which help them gain necessary skills?

“Case studies, consultancy services and projects for students”

Students are encouraged to take part in consultancy activities and the Civil department is well known for consultancy works. We encourage interested students to take part in consultancy works and solve problems. They need to work on project works and case studies to attain practical skills.

How do you help students to cope up with the competition being so high in the outside world? 

“Students shall focus on fundamentals and perform in competitive examinations”

There is a big competition in the external world in government sectors like PWD, CPWD and Railways. Students need to pass examinations to get a good government job. They need to be aware of fundamentals in civil engineering. We always tell them to focus on studying fundamentals. So, they can be able to tackle the problems and perform in exams very well. 


What are the challenges you are facing to uplift the quality of education at The National Institute of Engineering, Mysore?

“Lack of input quality, communication skills and fundamental concepts are the greatest challenges for the Engineering students”. High intake and poor input quality are causes of concern. They are not very good in mathematics and communications. Extra effort is needed to convey the information to students. We are putting more efforts to convey the fundamentals and mathematical concepts.


How does the college enhance the skills of the faculty and prepares them according to the industry standards?

“Through Faculty development programs, seminars, conferences and hands on training”

We organize several programmes for faculty. They can attend technical education quality improvement programmes. Our faculty has been sent to various training programmes. They can also attend various seminars and conferences organized by IITs and NITs. It makes them industry ready.


What do you see as the greatest strengths of The National Institute of Engineering, Mysore?

“Qualified teaching and technical staff, good laboratories with state of art facilities and good placement cell”
