Dr.Tanuja Bandivadekar is the Head of Department (Civil) and a Professor at MPSTME, NMIMS. She holds a teaching experience of 18 years and industrial experience of 15 years. Currently, she is a member of the Institute of Engineers, India, and a life member of bodies like ISTE, ISSE, IGS, and more.

What are the most essential skills to be a successful civil engineer according to you?

“All it takes is management skills and critical thinking”

As civil engineers progress through their careers, eventually, they will have a responsibility as a manager of a project, sub-team, or even entire division. To be successful in this position he will need to develop management and leadership skills, including the ability to manage different personalities and backgrounds on important projects. It also includes knowing how to utilize team strengths, especially if there are time and/or financial constraints. Time management is the core of a successful project. Complex construction projects require effective organization and time management if they are to be delivered to budget and on time. All good engineers possess excellent analytical skills and are strong at giving solutions to make a particular aspect of a project work better. They are often faced with challenging problems and must be able to apply concepts and rules to specific problems and give “Out of the Box” solutions.

What are the factors that make this program the best for the students to opt for?

“Being one of its kind”

The civil engineering program of MPSTME, NMIMS is accredited by an international agency ABET. ABET accreditation assures that programs meet global standards and produce graduates that are ready to enter critical technical fields and lead the way in innovation and emerging technologies and anticipating the welfare and safety needs of the public. The civil engineering department of MPSTME consists of 23 faculty members with the right mix of senior-junior and middle-level faculty members with industry experience. Very few institutes in India have an international student chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineering. Department of Civil Engineering, MPSTME has successfully arranged 4 days national level student conference under the aegis of ASCE, India region.

What scope does this field carry for the female aspirants?

“Liberty to choose from the best career opportunities”

Female aspirants after their graduation can work in:

  • Design office for RCC and steel structure design, High rise building design with the added skill of latest software usage.
  • Construction and project management for a large Infra project.
  • Environmental engineering consulting firms.
  • Concrete consultant for high strength and specialized concrete.

What are some valuable insights into the program that you are offering at your institute/department?

“Blending the necessary aspects and concepts required to shape a civil engineer”

The Civil Engineering program curriculum is a balanced mix of basic science courses, basic engineering courses, management courses, civil engineering core courses, elective and open elective courses. We are offering elective courses in Structural Engineering, Geotechnical and Transportation Engineering, Water Resources and Environmental Engineering, and Construction management and building services as per the requirement of our international lead society ASCE and national agency AICTE. The civil engineering curriculum is designed in a way where students are exposed to application-oriented learning, giving them a chance to apply concepts to real-life problems. The capstone project involves the design of residential or commercial buildings from architectural planning to complete RCC design, design reports including detailed drawings for execution. Students get hands-on experience of complete project design executed in a professional office.

How does the program ensure that students are being prepared for the future?

“Putting together all the necessary elements in the curriculum for the best results”

Apart from regular curriculum teaching students are encouraged to opt for summer or winter internships. This gives them exposure to industry expectations. Several guest lectures by professional engineers and academicians are arranged to keep students updated about industry trends. We are having an international student chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineering, CESA. Various technical and social activities of CESA give students a chance to develop their technical as well as soft skills which are very important to achieve success in their professional life. Students are given exposure to value added software training. These multiple activities prepare them for their future.

Do you conduct any field visits for students to make them industry ready?

“Multiple initiatives and programs to match the changing needs”

Starting from the 2nd year of engineering as per the requirement of the subject in curriculum field visits are arranged for students. surveying camp, geology visit, visit hydroelectric project, RMC plant, infrastructure construction site, water treatment plant to name a few site/ field visits arranged for students to make them industry-ready.

How do you make sure the students are well aware of the practical situation of construction sites in India and what are the major materials used in different construction sites?

“Meticulous planning keeping in mind the future requirements of the professionals”

As mentioned earlier we arrange site visits for students. Site visits to infrastructure projects are arranged to understand what advanced construction machinery and techniques are used in practice. Site visit to high rise building construction not only helps them to understand the challenges involved but also how knowledge from various branches of engineering is required for successful completion of projects.

What are the types of projects that the students are working on through this program?

“Every project designed to cover every possible topic in the curriculum”

Civil engineering students work on a one-year duration project which includes literature review, actual project work, and then a final presentation in front of industry experts.

Some of the project topics are as mentioned below:

  • Experimental projects on specialty concrete and sustainable building materials
  • Structural design projects including repairs and restoration projects.
  • Solutions for traffic problems.
  • Geotechnical design projects like micro piling solution for multistory building
  • Improvement in the water distribution system for the large township
  • 3D printing in Civil Engineering
  • Wind energy harvesting

What are the benefits and career options after pursuing this course?

“A wide range of options where students can explore their talents further”

After completing the course students can work as an entrepreneur, structural design engineer, urban planner, geotechnical consultant, construction, and project manager for Megaprojects, sustainability consultant, hydraulic engineer, environmental engineering consultant.
