MPSTME

Dr. Manoj Sankhe is the Head of the Department-EXTC at MPSTME, NMIMS; Mumbai. Having spent a considerable amount of time in the education sector, he wants to expose students to a pragmatic learning environment where they can learn, explore, and grow simultaneously. Read here what he has to say in his interview.

Why do you think the students should opt for this field of engineering?

“We ensure students are learning in alignment to the current industry standards”

The B. Tech. program in Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering offered by the Mukesh Patel School of Technology, Management and Engineering, NMIMS University, Mumbai, provides studies in critical technical areas such as digital communication techniques, information theory, electronic design, and high-frequency techniques. Besides a solid math science/engineering education, the student can improve his/her skills by tailoring the course to his requirements. It can be done by choosing among several optional modules in application fields such as IoT, Embedded Systems, Networking, Communication, and many more.

What are the key skills one must sharpen to become a successful engineer in this field?

“These are the paramount skills a student should focus on”

Knowledge of Analog and Digital system design

Fundamentals of analog and digital circuit design, Instrumentation and Control systems

Knowledge of Communication systems

Fundamentals of Analog and Digital communication, RF & Microwave Engineering, Antennas, Satellite communication, Wireless Communication, and Optical Fiber Communication.

Embedded systems and IoT (Internet of Things)

Understanding of memory regions, knowledge of sensors and different peripherals, good understanding of 8/16/32 bit microcontrollers (PIC, ARM and CORTEX), etc and Application Specific Integrated Circuits (ASIC). Knowledge of IoT gateways, Edge computing and Cloud computing.

Software development and visualization knowledge

C, C++, Java, Python, Matlab, etc.8/

Interpersonal skills

Communication skills, presentation skills, teamwork, leadership, ethics etc are the key to success.

How do you align the curriculum with the specific needs of the Electronic and telecommunications industry?

“We maintain a perfect balance of practical and theoretical fundamentals in our curriculum”

The program's curriculum includes an adequate balance of fundamental / foundation, core courses with elective courses, and a choice of open electives. The courses are based on a credit structure with 22-26 credits per semester, totalling to around 167 credits for the entire B. Tech Program. Every course is assigned lectures, practicals, and tutorials as per the requirement. Students also undergo technical entrepreneurship and a project in the 4th year. The program course content is reviewed every year with industry inputs and participation.

The Student Portal facilitates learning beyond the classroom through YouTube and other online content available on the net. Through these innovative teaching and learning processes, students have many opportunities to learn through different modes. The curriculum also emphasizes continuous self-learning. Students are also offered a B.Tech Honors degree upon completing 20 extra credits gained through certified MOOCs courses from Coursera and IBM.

What are some valuable insights of the program that you are offering at your institute/dept.?

“The innovation in Pedagogy ensures students have several learning opportunities”

The curriculum of B.Tech incorporates industry-based internships, design-based projects, and specialized courses (Departmental & Open electives). Also, to address the ‘Y’ Generation needs, which expect 24x7 online learning content as a supplement to classroom learning, several delivery modes are available. Additionally, project-based learning, implementation of technology projects executed in the industry, and participation in international competitions and conferences give relevant exposure.

Faculty members upgrade their knowledge and technical skill set by participating in Faculty Development Programs, Conferences, and certified MOOCs courses.”

How do you tend to build an industry connection with this program?

“We timely introduce many industrial interventions”

The department regularly organizes expert talks on the latest technologies by industry experts and academicians from reputed institutions. The institute has a dedicated Training and Placement Department, which organizes soft skill and aptitude training. Also, to build a strong industry connection, students are encouraged to take up industry based projects and visit industries as per their interest.

What were the challenges that you faced while inculcating this program in your curriculum?

“Developing the adequate content to provide essential learning is a challenge”

Some of the challenges we have come across while teaching this program are the development of content and material that would facilitate students' learning and the ever-evolving industrial trends. It requires the teacher to acquire adequate knowledge in domains that are necessary to make the student industry-ready.
