Mohamed Minhal Review at Toronto Metropolitan University, Toronto | Collegedunia

I still have a long way to go with university experience, but so far the university experience has been amazing given the challenging times we are in. Everyone at the university is very welcoming and helpful, you just have to ask to be helped. One thing I was not happy about and as for most international students is that the tuition remained the same during online classes.

I chose Ryerson University as I was really impressed by the courses offered for my program (Computer Science). The courses look very interesting and the syllabus is updated, unlike other universities which have outdated structures. I also preferred the location of Ryerson university, as its at the heart of Toronto, in downtown. I heard a lot of positive thing about professors and faculties at Ryerson, so did not hesitate and so far its been amazing.

Course Curriculum :

The course syllabus is average I would say, but certainly better than some Universities. Some Universities have courses with very less practical learning in them, with Ryerson's Computer Science program we have a few hardware courses and some very interesting programming courses. Almost all universities do require you to take general education courses, for Ryerson I found the first year general education courses to be average, but after Second year there is a good variety of interesting courses. Also I am a transfer student to Ryerson from York, and as for the structure at York, students were required to take 4 general education courses a year which is a complete waste, compared to Ryerson's 2 per year.

Exams :

I followed the British GCE Curriculum in my high school. The general requirement for International Advanced Level(IAL) students was to take a minimum of three subjects in their A levels with minimum grades of BCC in them. IELTS or TOEFL are not required if you carried out your studies entirely in English or are from a country where the first language is English. So I was not required to take any standardized tests.

Placement :

Career prospects for students pursuing Computer Science degrees are very high. Since I am a first year student, I do not have clear information on study placements.

Events :

Ryerson's campus is located in the very busy are of downtown. There is always something going on in the streets, some students find it not so safe during the night as its an open campus, but it has its advantages too as most restaurants or bars are all close to Ryerson. It is also next to Eaton Center, which is Toronto's largest shopping mall so students can hang around there in their free time.

Scholarship :

No.

Faculty :

The faculty is certainly very helpful especially to first years. I am a first year and had a few technical issues in the beginning, but the faculty was really approachable and helpful. I also had an issue with my high school transcripts not reaching my university, the faculty was very considerate and extended the due date for me by a month. As for professors, I do not have a lot of knowledge about them as I am still in my first semester, but so far all the professors I have are good.

Hostel :

No I do not live on campus.
