An Honest College Review

6.8 /10

UNLV is my local college. I attended mostly because the tuition would be a resident cost and not an out of state tuition cost. I started as an education major and became a social work major after realizing that fit my wants more.

Course Curriculum :

I think that it could be better. There is a lot of disorganization within the program and a lot of miscommunication. There is also not a lot of support for social workers in my city, so many of us have to fend for ourselves with internships and getting jobs.

Exams :

SAT, ACT Will be taking the licensing exam for social workers after getting my degree this spring (of 2019).

Placement :

There are not a lot of jobs for BSW students. In my city and state, having a bachelors in social work doesn't mean much unless you have your masters. I wish there was more support for transitioning students directly into jobs instead of into an MSW.

Internship :

Yes. Internships are part of our curriculum as social work students. There is no stipend. I wish there were more internship opportunities and that more placements were clear on what our actual responsibilities would be.

Events :

I really enjoyed attending events from our Writing sector, Black Mountain Institute. We had many speakers over the years come to discuss their writing as well as local writers who read their work. I am always struck by how much support we have with our writers.

Fees :

Tuition was the largest cost, at about $100-$200 a credit. The fees that really frustrated me and other students were things like study abroad and other fees that we did not choose to use.

Scholarship :

Yes, I have. I have grants and a scholarship to pay for my tuition, while my loans pay for my living expenses.

Examination Structure :

I don't think that our exams always make sense. Many classes where we had tests did not actually review the material covered on the exams. I didn't always feel like I was really learning what I was there for.

Faculty :

I think they could be better trained and give a better understanding to students what the goal of the class is. There are some teachers who are excellent and give a great understanding of the field too, though.

Hostel :

I lived in a dorm during my freshman year, at home for two years, and then at an apartment and a home in my last couple of years. My best living situation is where I am currently because I am living with two roommates and I am located in a central area.
