In order to get admission in PhD candidates must have a valid GATE score or any entrance exam score as given in the table above. The candidates would be shortlisted for an interview (also a written test) on the basis of fulfilment of the minimum proposed eligibility criteria.

The selection criteria at IIT Kanpur for the PhD program is divided into 4 stages, namely:

• Stage 2: Shortlisting of candidates for the interview round

Application process

1. Candidates who have a Master’s degree in a relevant field with a minimum of 55% marks or 5.1 CPI can apply for the program.
2. Candidates who have a bachelor’s degree with minimum of 75% marks of 7.5 CGPA and a valid GATE score can also apply for the PhD program.

• Shortlisting of the candidates for the interview round

The applicants will be shortlisted on the basis of written test and academic record as well as work experience. The institute offers 20 seats for the PhD program. 10 seats are given to open category students whereas the other 50% of seats is distributed among the reserved category students.

• Interview and Written test

To prepare the selection list, the institute will determine the candidates’ potential on the basis of a written test and personal interview. PI round will evaluate the academic background of the applicant, his/her general academic proficiency, academic & related publications and such related matters.

• Preparation of selection list

After conducting the PI round, the institute will prepare the selection list based on written test and personal interview. 40% weightage is given to the written test and the rest 60% is given to the personal interview round.

IIT Kanpur PhD Course Details

PhD candidates at IIT Kanpur who have completed a masters degree need to take at least 6 courses whereas a direct PhD candidate has to take at least 10 courses. 

• The candidate needs to register for minimum 36 credits in semester. 
• There are 72 credits for candidates who apply without a degree of masters in Engineering.
• Applicants can apply twice a year for PhD at IIT Kanpur. The admission criteria is the same for both rounds.

The students have to opt for a set of elective programmes from the below- given courses:

Program Structure:

• Course Work: PhD candidates with masters degree have to take at least 6 courses and direct PhD candidates have to take at least 10 courses. 
• Comprehensive Exam: Within 6 months of course work completion, the student has to clear a comprehensive exam which is in written as well as oral form both. 
• State of the Art Seminar: The candidate has to present her/his research issue and necessary literature survey in 6 months of date of comprehensive exam
• Open Seminar: Once thesis work gets clear by the department, she/he will be allowed for submitting it
• Defense: After the review from referees, candidate can give defense of their work

IIT Kanpur PhD Financial Assistance

For students of PhD, corresponding financial assistance given is INR 18,000 in case of engineering, INR 16,000 in case of Sciences/Social Sciences for first 2 years and after that it’s raised to INR 20,000 and INR 18,000 for another 2 years.
