IIT Madras MSc Program Details

IIT Madras offers the Master of Sciences program fof 2 years comprising 4 semesters. The course provides students with skills required for their future studies ocareerser in a related field. Students who want to pursue the course have to complete it on a classroom basis. The two-year M.Sc. program curriculum offers mainly three areas of specialization namely Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.

  • IIT Madras offers specializations in Master of Sciences in courses in three fields namely M.Sc. in Physics, M.Sc. in Mathematics, and M.Sc. in Chemistry.
  • All the courses are offered on a full-time and classroom basis only. There is no provision for part-time and distance courses for this course.
  • The complete course is worth 221 credits out of which a total of 51 credits are assigned to the first year.
  • The course also comprises two projects and four elective subjects in the last two semesters of the course.
  • The syllabus and schemes of the first and second semesters are decided by the college administration while students can opt for self-study for some subjects in the last semesters.

Program Structure

  • Course Structure: The maximum duration granted to complete the M.Sc. course is 3 years. The minimum number of working days in the combined first and second semesters shall be 150 days. In the 3rd to 8th semesters, there shall be a minimum of 75 working days. The scheme and syllabi of the first and second year are assigned by college administrations whereas, from the 3rd semester onwards, students will be eligible to choose a course of their own choice.
  • Attendance: Candidates must maintain at least 75% attendance in the entire coursework to be eligible for end-term examinations
  • Assessments: Students are assessed based on their performance in internal examinations, assignments such as homework, problem-solving, group discussionsquizzesiz, literature surveys, seminarsprojectsct, etc.
  • End-Term Examinations: Candidates who secure not less than 40% marks in end-term examinations will be considered to pass in that semester. Students are provided with elective courses during the final year of coursework where they can select courses of their own choice.
