NIT Calicut Ph.D. Eligibility Criteria

Candidates seeking admission to NIT Calicut Ph.D. shall fulfill the following eligibility criteria as mentioned below:

  • Must have secured a minimum of 60% aggregate marks or CGPA 6.5/10 in Master’s Degree.
  • 5% relaxation will be given to SC/ST/PWD candidates.
  • Must have a valid Gate score in respective discipline or fellowships such as JRF/UGC/NET/CSIR/KSCSTE etc.

NIT Calicut Ph.D. programs are offered in 13 specializations across various departments namely Engineering, Architecture planning, Mathematics Physics, Chemistry, and Management as full-time, part-time, External, and internal options to the students. 

  • NIT Calicut Ph.D. program is structured around a certain number of core courses, a comprehensive examination, Viva-Voce, a pre-Ph.D. examination and Thesis work.

  • Evaluation: The Ph.D. thesis submitted by the scholar will be evaluated by two external examiners. On receipt of satisfactory thesis evaluation reports from both the examiners, an Oral Examination Board will be constituted by the Chairman Senate for the conduct of the thesis Défense or oral examination.
  • Residential Requirement: The minimum residential requirement for External and Part-time Scheme Scholars is one semester. While the full-time scholars have to be available the whole time on the campus.
  • Reservation Policy: NIT Calicut Ph.D. program follows the Government of India reservation policy for OBC/SC/ST and the Differently Abled (PwD) Candidates.

NIT Calicut Ph.D. Financial Assistance

  • Half-time Research Assistantship (HTRA) is available for a few full-time research scholars who are not receiving any financial support or scholarship from other Agencies or State or Central Governments, subject to the availability as stipulated by the Ministry of Education (MoE), Govt. of India (GoI). 
  • They are required to assist the Department in the academic work for at least 8 hours per week as per guidelines issued by the MoE, in addition to satisfying other conditions for the award/renewal of the fellowship
  • The government of India can reissue the award and renewal of the assistantship from time to time.

Ques. What is the maximum age limit to apply for the NIT Calicut Ph.D. program?

Ans. The maximum age limit for the NIT Calicut Ph.D. program is 50 years. People beyond the age of 50 cannot be enrolled for the Ph.D. at NIT Calicut.

Ques. What is the refund policy for NIT Calicut Ph.D. in case the candidate withdraws the admission?

Ans. If a student withdraws from the NIT Calicut Ph.D. admission after enrolment, then, the institute shall return no fees other than the caution fees to the students.

Ques. Is it mandatory for all to clear the GATE exam or similar entrance exam for NIT Calicut Ph.D.?

Ans. Candidates who wish to apply for the part-time, internal or external NIT Calicut Ph.D. program are exempted from the eligibility of the GATE or any entrance exam scores.

Ques. Who is eligible for the Direct Admission to NIT Calicut Ph.D.? 

Ans. Direct admission to the NIT Calicut Ph.D. program is applicable only to the candidates with B.E./ B. Tech. degree have scored a minimum of 8.5 CGPA or 80% aggregate marks. They are eligible to apply for direct Ph.D. admission within 5 years after obtaining the qualifying degree. For SC/ST/PWD candidates, it is 8 CGPA or 75% Marks.

Ques. What happens when PWD seats of the NIT Calicut Ph.D. program are not filled? 

Ans. In the absence of NIT Calicut Ph.D. application from PwD candidates, the seat reserved for the PwD category will be filled by the candidate(s) who belong to the same category (without PwD).
