IIT Patna PhD admission is currently open. The online application started on October 20 and the last date for online application is November 5th, 2023. IIT Patna offers PhD program in a total of 10 electives. The selection of the candidates will be based on their performance in the written test and interview conducted by the institute. Candidates holding high GATE scores will be preferred.

IIT Patna Ph.D. Admission Criteria 2023

Admission to Ph.D. program at IIT Patna is based on entrance scores of GATE/NET along with interviews. International candidates will be evaluated for a written test/interview based on their scores in TOEFL. 

Exemptions

The candidate who fulfills the below-given criteria will be exempted from giving a written test.

• B. Tech from IIT who has passed with a degree in a relevant stream with a CPI of 8/10 or more that. 
• Completed master's degree from IITs/IISc, bachelor's degree in last 5 years, with a degree in relevant stream with CGPA of 8.5/10 or above.

For the candidate of SC/ST categories, a 5% relaxation will be given in the eligibility criteria. The seat reservation in admissions is according to rules set by the Government of India.

IIT Patna Ph.D. Course Details

The candidate of a discipline needs to register for a number of courses (minimum) as given below which all depends on the highest degree they obtained

• For an MTech/ME/MPhil/Equivalent degree the candidate needs to register for a minimum of 2 courses and 12 credits
• For M.Sc./MA/MCA/MBA, the candidate has to register for a minimum of 4 courses and 24 credits
• M.Com/equivalent/btech the candidate has to register for 6 courses and 36 credits.
• In all the cases mentioned above, a minimum of 50% course has to be related to the candidate’s research area
• All research scholars need to register for the credit course i.e. Essential English which is offered by the department of HSS

Course Structure:

• Course Work: The supervisor has to suggest the programs that candidates need to register for.
• Grading: Based on the candidate’s performance, each candidate will be awarded a final letter grade.
• Comprehensive Exam: For testing the competence as well as academic preparation of the candidate, a comprehensive exam will be conducted within 18 months (ME/MTech/MPhil degrees) and 24 months (BE/BTech/MA/MSc) degrees.
• Registration Seminar: After the completion of a comprehensive exam, candidates need to present a Registration Seminar (RS).
• Submission of Thesis: Within 2 months of synopsis acceptance by DC, the candidate submits copies of their thesis to the academic section in a prescribed format.
• Viva Voce: Here, candidates need to make an oral presentation on their thesis.

IIT Patna Ph.D. Financial Assistance

A candidate under the full-time category receives a financial assistantship from the Institute. JRF/SRF fellows receive fellowships from funding agencies that are government like UGC, DST, CSIR, etc.

The Institute assistantships will be available to eligible (Indian) students as per prevailing (MHRD, GoI) norms, as applicable from time to time. At present total emoluments are INR 31,000 per month.
