In the inaugural rankings, leading institutions in the area were recognised, including those in the Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, and Malaysia, with Indonesia's Bina Nusantara University topping the list. Its 73.70 grade was based mostly on the quality of its teaching and learning. The rankings, according to AppliedHE's CEO, are based on the aspects that are most important to students and their parents. Other aspects including globalization, community participation and institutional prestige were also considered. It is the first international rating system that solely covers private universities, according to Kevin Downing, head of AppliedHE's ranking advisory board. The colleges and universities themselves audited and submitted the data obtained by AppliedHE for the rankings. Private colleges are noted for their innovative curricula and excellent graduate employment rates, and they have a considerable effect on the education market internationally. In order to increase their standards, they frequently form partnerships with overseas institutions.
According to Dr Marianas, private colleges have played a significant influence in expanding the number of students pursuing higher education. Five of the top ten universities in the world are from Indonesia, according to the QS World University Ranking. The University of Santo Tomas in the Philippines is placed fourth, while Thailand's Krirk and Duy Tan universities are ranked eighth and seventh, respectively. The University of Tenaga Nasional in Malaysia came in second. Other universities from throughout the country were also included in the top 20.

Malaysia Qualifications Agency's Quality Education Evaluation System (AppliedHE) strives to improve the quality of teaching and learning across the world. The agency's goal with AppliedHE is to assist Malaysian students and parents in making well-informed selections when it comes to selecting a university. Sub-rankings in categories including community participation, globalization, and research were also issued by the system. Indonesia was placed first in research, while the other top ten colleges were chosen based on community involvement. In terms of globalisation, Thailand's Krirk University was placed top. She stated that the country's private institutions are highly active and devoted to increasing education quality.

The introduction of a private university ranking was inspired by private institutions' worries that they were not being treated equally to public universities. Currently, the educational quality of private universities is not comparable to that of public universities. AppliedHE launched the Private University Ranking to acknowledge private universities throughout Asia. It takes into consideration Google Scholar findings as well as other external sources.
