According to a report released by the Bureau of Immigration, the total number of Indian students who decided to study abroad is around 1,33,135 so far. This is considerably lower than previous years’ figures. In 2021, the total number of students was around 4,44,553 and in 2020, the number of students who went abroad for higher education amounted to 2,59,655.

The report was presented in Rajya Sabha in written form by V. Muraleedharan, Minister of State for External Affairs. The report further stated that the UK, USA, and Canada were the top choices for Indian students planning to study abroad.
According to Mr V. Muraleedharan, his Ministry is going to ensure that Indian students can smoothly travel abroad to pursue their studies. To this end, Ministry officials will be directly working with the country concerned to resolve issues such as temporary restrictions or delays in granting visas.

Indian students planning to pursue higher studies abroad can register themselves voluntarily in the Student Module of the MADAD portal. On the portal, they can provide information such as course details, name of institution, contact details, overseas residence details and address, and emergency contact number.
The Ministry of External Affairs has been regularly encouraging students going abroad to register themselves on this portal. It has also requested Indian student organizations and Indian Community associations abroad to also register on the portal.

This will allow the Ministry to track the students and reach out to them to redress grievances or provide immediate assistance in case of any emergency. Around 23,568 students are currently registered on the Portal.
Meenakshi Lekhi, Minister of State for External Affairs also informed the house that around 22,500 Indian nationals were returned to India when the Russia-Ukraine war first started in February.
The Government also launched the Vande Bharat Mission during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 to bring back Indian nationals to the country and facilitate the return of foreign nationals from India to other countries.
