What is better new IIT like Bhilai or NIT Raipur for CSE?

TG
Taiti Ghosh Posted On : March 26th, 2021
B.Tech National Institutes of Technology, National Institute of Technology, Raipur (2021)

The IITs are a brand themselves. IITs like IIT Bombay, IIT Madras, IIT Kharagpur are getting ranked among the top institutes in the world, and that's a very big achievement for our country. Although IIT Bhilai is a newly formed IIT, it will make its way to one of the top institutes of our country. So if you are able to secure a seat at IIT Bhilai it is better to go for it rather than choosing NIT Raipur.

NIT Raipur is also a great institute with great faculty and good placement records over the years, but my suggestion is to go for IIT Bhilai. Students at IIT Bhilai are mentored by IIT Hyderabad which has a great reputation in terms of CSE Branch.

The faculty of the CSE branch at IIT Hyderabad is great at their job and they mentor the students of IIT Bhilai. They also have their own faculty from top NITs which are better in the ranking than NIT Raipur.

So it can be a safe decision to choose IIT Bhilai for the CSE branch and as an IITian it will be also helpful in the future during placements or applying for a job at top companies.

If you are looking to pursue engineering from a reputed institute, you might want to consider IIT Bhilai or IIT Dharwad, rather than  MNIT Jaipur for CSE. Either of these institutes would be a great choice for your higher education. Here are some reasons why you should consider IIT Bhilai:

  • Highly talented and dedicated students showcase their achievements through the "Polaris - IIT Bhilai" website, created in just two weeks to guide juniors.

How is IIT Bhilai overall?

YT
Yash Tiwari Posted On : January 29th, 2021
B.Tech from IIT Bhubaneswar (2021)

One of my juniors is pursuing his BTech from IIT Bhilai. Some of the important details about the institute are discussed below according to his experience at the institute.

Campus:

  • It shares the GEC Raipur campus. As GEC Raipur is a government based engineering college, the campus is good enough to accommodate 3 more colleges at the same time.
  • In comparison to other IITs, the campus is quite small in size.
  • The main campus will probably start in the next 5 years.

Academics:

  • You may think that a new IIT may not have much good quality of academics but the fact is that the level of faculties appointed is the same for all IIT’s.
  • In the case of newer ones, you are at an advantage since the class-strength is lower. It is easy to interact with the teachers and understand the topics taught in class.
  • Moreover, the institute set up the labs at a good pace, so that the academics won’t lag behind.

Cultural Activities & Events:

  • The college had recently organized its first tech event in 2017, named ‘TECHMAITRY’. In the same year, IIT Bhilai also had its first cultural cum tech fest.
  • Besides this, there are good clubs and their activities take place such as Dance Club, Music Club, Orators Club, etc.

Sports & Games:

  • Proceeding further towards sports & games, the institute is getting a large number of participants in upcoming years.
  • The college participated in Inter-IIT sports meets for games like badminton, volleyball, table tennis, and athletics over the years.
  • Recently, the college also had basketball, football, and cricket matches and similarly, it will add more in forthcoming years.

For further details regarding the clubs, labs, etc. you may ask your seniors, they will be able to guide you in a better way.

What should I take Metallurgy and Material Science at IIT Indore or Electrical at IIT Bhilai?

AR
Anirudh Roy Posted On : January 11th, 2021
B.Tech Mechanical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology, KGP (2020)

In general, it is better to choose the branch of your choice. Given below are a few trade-offs of the two choices given on the question which may help you in making the decision.

MEMS - IIT Indore:

  • Administration: IIT Indore belongs to the 2008-09 batch of IITs. Although it can’t be compared with older IITs but it has made remarkable progress in this short span of time. The administration and departments are well-settled. Extra-curricular at the institute are also developing with time. In 4-5 years, the institute is expected to have a great future.
  • Course: BTech MEMS at IIT Indore is fairly new and the duration of the existence of the course is the same as the B Tech Electrical course at IIT Bhilai. However, the MEMS department has been functioning for a while at IIT Indore. As a department it has experience. The faculties are great.
  • Placements: MEMS has a lower placement rate as compared to other core branches of engineering. Metallurgy and Material Science is a niche field of study and the degree outcome is more research-oriented.
  • Change of Branch: However, you can change your branch to Electrical or Mechanical from MEMES at IIT I, if you work hard in your 1st year. Changing to CS is always difficult because of the competition.

Electrical at IIT Bhilai:

  • Facilities: IIT Bhilai was established back in 2016. It is only 4 years old. Electrical is a core Engineering discipline with better career prospects. But the disadvantage of this choice is the institute. You will have a few seniors in your branch and temporary faculties.
  • Extracurricular: You will have good opportunities to start events, clubs, in the institute. On the other hand, the future at this institute is a bit uncertain.
  • Campus Life: The institute also does not have a proper campus. You will not have a proper campus life for the next 4 years.

The table below shows a brief overview of the two institutes.

Particulars

IIT Indore

IIT Bhilai

Average CTC

17 LPA

11.22 LPA

Seats

53

54

Fees

INR 9.15 Lakh

INR 4.90 Lakh

One of my friends had an option between Mechanical at IIT Indore and CS at a new IIT. He chose Mechanical at IIT Indore. Judging by his experience it is safe to say that he made the right decision at least for 2-3 more years.

The choice is up to you if you would rather trade off on the branch or on the institution. If you are confident you can secure a good future from the limited opportunities a new IIT can offer, you should go for it.

Should one take admission at IIT Bhilai/Chhattisgarh?

PS
Prateek Shukla Posted On : January 29th, 2021
B.Tech Electrical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology, Bhilai (2020)

There is a myth that the new IITs are not that good since it does not have a vast alumni network. Which is true to some extent. But it is not always the case.

IIT Bhilai is a prestigious college to attend. It is one of the youngest and fastest-growing third-generation IITs under the guardianship of IIT Hyderabad. It is an autonomous institute with decent academics, great faculty, and excellent placement records.

Academics:

  • The selection procedure of faculty is at par with any other IIT.
  • The institute has well-qualified, supportive faculty members.
  • You are supposed to clear JEE Advanced and those bases decide to pursue science at a top institute. You should not be worried about the academics being so hard as JEE prepares you in a unique style.
  • The fractal system of academics is followed here.

Campus and Infrastructure:

  • IIT Bhilai has a transit campus located at the Government College of Engineering Raipur while its permanent campus is under construction and expected to start functioning by the year 2022.
  • The college offers a host of facilities like hostels for boys and girls, well-equipped labs and classrooms, sports facilities, a library, and more.

Sports Facilities:

  • The institute holds a position in the lines of grades 9&10 in the inter-IIT events.
  • The talent pool of the institute is too small due to low batch strength in comparison with other IITs. Due to that reason, the participants perform very well.
  • The batch strength is likely to rise in the upcoming years.

Placement Opportunities:

What should I take IIT Dharwad or IIT Bhilai with Electrical Mechanical or IIT Dhanbad with Petroleum?

SN
Souvik Nayak Posted On : January 11th, 2021
B.Tech Mechanical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology, Dhanbad (2018)

IIT Dhanbad is known for offering the best program for a degree in Petroleum around the world. You will have the chance to secure a job with top companies with high packages, sometimes even leading up to 20 LPA.

The table below gives a brief insight into the institutes.

Particulars

IIT Dharwad Electrical

IIT Bhilai MEchanical

IIT Dhanbad Petroleum

Placement Rate

60%

65%

80%

Highest CTC

14 LPA

8 LPA

32 LPA

Average CTC

6 LPA

3.5 LPA

8 LPA

Current scenario:

  • The number of high paying placements for Petroleum Engineering has considerably reduced after the institute became an IIT. If you have confidence on securing a well-paying job then go ahead and apply for the course in Petroleum.
  • If placement is important to you then you might want to reconsider your options. Electrical and Mechanical observe a high number of placements considering they are core branches of Engineering. Petroleum being a niche field of study sees fewer placements.

Infrastructure: (Winning Institute - IIT Dhanbad)

  • IIT Dharwad and IIT Bhilai are fairly new and therefore still do not offer a fully-developed campus.
  • IIT Dhanbad, on the other hand, has a well-developed campus that offers students all modern and updated facilities such as practical labs, multiple academic blocks, a digital library, and more. In terms of Infrastructure, IIT Dhanbad is way better.

Both options have their advantages and disadvantages so weigh in those and choose as you see fit.

Faculty:

  • Most of the faculty members of EE are young and have good research experiences. Many of them have PhDs and PostDocs from reputed IITs and universities abroad.
  • The faculties at the institute are approachable. If you show interest in research work, they can also include you in their research work. You can also seek help from Ph.D. students.

Laboratories:

The institute offers fully-functional and well-designed practical labs for main courses in Electrical Engineering such as Control and Power systems, Analog and Electrical Machines.

Placements:

  • IIT Jammu had the first placement drive in 2020. According to the placement report the average CTC offered was 8 LPA.
  • The highest placement within the EE branch as of now is 31 LPA by Amazon.

Projects:

  • You can pursue many projects at IIT Jammu. The lab work includes projects which make up for nearly 20 to 30% of the entire course.
