NG
Niharika Gupta, Posted On : November 23rd, 2021
Studied at Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) (2016)

Considering the top three acting schools of India let me share the cost of studying at each:

National School of Drama, Delhi:

  • It is the least expensive and you will get a chance to earn while studying.
  • You get a monthly stipend of INR 8000.
  • The fees for tuition, hostel and books are negligible.
  • This is the perfect institute for budding theatre actors.
  • This is heavily funded by the government as well.

The Indian School of Acting, Delhi-NCR:

  • It is a relatively new acting school which is growing really fast.
  • It is the best private acting school which has reasonable fees.
  • The fee is INR 45,000 for 6 months and INR 80,000 for 1 year.

FTII, Pune:

  • It is one of the best government acting schools of India.
  • The fees is nearly 2.5 lakhs for a 2 years course.
  • This is a bit expensive but quite popular.

There are many other acting schools in India which offer quality education like Whistling Woods International, SRFTI and many more. You can learn about them online, and then make your decision.

If candidates have no theater certificate, then how it get admission in NSD?

The admission procedure at NSD is quite unpredictable. If you have done 6 plays it will help but it doesn’t necessarily mean that you will get selected.

Let’s say a person has 8 years of stage experience and has done over 20 plays. But there is no diversity. Also, he/she does not have much direction or backstage experience. It’s not likely that he/she will be selected.

However, if you have done 5 plays and have good technical knowledge of theater, then you can get admission easily.

Join some local theatre club and do amateur theatre for a year or more. Try to work with different directors during your amateur theatre period. You can ask them for recommendations for admission.

Also, check the NSD website and stay updated. They usually release admission forms around the month of April-May.

There are one-month-long theater workshops held for children (age up to 18 years) during summer vacations (May-June). You will have to audition for it. Once you are selected you can enjoy the theater workshop and join Sunday Club part-1 later. Only people who have done the workshop, audition for it. After culmination plays and improvisations, you can further join Sunday club part-2 by auditioning.

NSD offers various courses and workshops for various age groups. They publish articles related to admission and plays from time to time.
