How is the interview at IIT Bhubaneswar for an M.Tech thermal? What are the chances that a general category guy with 3061 rank and 704 score get a seat?

MR

Chances are not much good as the number of seats in the thermal specialization are less (only 18) and IIT Bhubaneswar conducts a rigorous interview (half an hour to 45 minutes per candidate), within that duration you need to explain the topics on the board to the interviewers. Some of the interview questions asked in the previous year were boundary layer theory, transient heat conduction, the significance of Prandtl, Nusselt, etc.

The process for admission in the course is based on marks secured in graduation. The student must have 60% marks or 6.5 CGPA in a 10-point scale in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent (with a valid GATE score).

The final selection of regular candidates will be based on the combined scores of the candidates in GATE (70%) and the written test (30%). The Written Test and Interview shall be given equal weightage of 15% each.

Students in the unreserved category will be eligible to sit in the interview subject to scoring a minimum of 40% marks in the written test and for final selection a minimum of 50% marks in the interview.

Hence, an interview becomes a very crucial factor in securing admission. It is completely technical in nature as explained above it judges the in-depth knowledge of the applicant in the subject. NPTEL lectures can be useful in preparing for the interview so as to enhance the understanding of the in-depth concepts of the subject in detail. Since the analysis part of some concepts as mentioned above can also be asked. The project report is also required there so one can expect questions from there also.

Finally, the cut off of the course is around 600 hence you can expect to have a fair chance if you have good understanding and command over your subjects.

For the dual degree of Mechanical and Metallurgy, the opening and closing cut off rank in round 1 of JoSAA was 5163 and 5522 in the general category. The annual fees charged by this college for a B.Tech is close to 2 LPA INR. In the year 2018-19, 83% of the Mechanical Branch got placed. 89 companies visited the campus in the academic year of 2018-19. The average package offered was INR 11.44 LPA. Few of the top recruiters included companies like TATA Power, IBM Tesco, Trident Group, etc.

However, admission to an engineering college entirely depends on a student’s interest and capability.

After getting a seat acceptance letter, the student is required to visit the campus for the registration process at the time as mentioned in the letter. Any kind of late visit may affect the admission procedure. You are required to carry your admit card and seat acceptance letter with the required document like the 10th class mark sheet and certificate, proof of date of birth, original income certificate, migration certificate, 6 passport size photo, etc. Also, you are required to make advance fee deposits with proof. Note that the mode of fee deposit can be online banking or through demand draft.

When you reach the campus documents will be verified and you will also be required to sign some undertakings such as anti-ragging, guardian’s undertaking, and few more. After completing the deposition of fees, you are allowed to visit your department for further proceedings. The remission of fees is considered later and is subject to the submission of all documents.

If you want to opt for hostel than you need to mention it in the registration process and further you will be allotted hostel room number. Even if you want to be day-scholar, it needed to be mentioned whether you need bus services or not. The student is allowed only after complete proceedings and the requirement of documents to visit the department and hostel.
