Dr. Debjani Banerjee has been working as the Associate Dean Quality Assurance & Accreditation at Vivekanand Education Society's Business School, Mumbai, Maharashtra. She has an amazing 17 years of academic experience and 6 years of corporate experience. She has also worked as Faculty of Management for 13 years and 4 years in UG course. She has done her Masters in Economics, PGDM in Marketing Specialization and PhD in management as part of her academics. Her research areas are Retail Consumption & Economic Development as Influencers of Quality of Life- a study in the urban Indian context. She has presented papers in many national and international conferences. Her core areas of interest are micro economics and business environment focusing on the macro dynamics of the business world.

What keeps you connected with the education sector and how has your experience been so far with the institute?

Our institute takes utmost care in reviewing the academic curriculum twice a year and during the review process, we invite industry experts to evaluate both the curriculum as well as its delivery process. This helps us in adopting the contemporary industry practices and thus make our students future ready by inculcating best skills in them.

How do you bring in a practical and industry oriented approach towards subjects?

"By assigning assignments and project to students once I finish a topic"

We don't use chalk and talk teaching processes, rather we emphasize equally on giving both theoretical and practical knowledge to our students through case studies and live discussion in classrooms. Every course has project work under which our students do research in their respective domain either through primary or secondary data. The Institute library has an industry database for the students to get updated industry input, to be used for their project.

Which approaches do you bring in apart from curriculum to teach the students?

"We conduct guest lectures to increase students interaction with the corporate world"

Every course we offer comes with a blend of industry sessions and guest lectures. Apart from this, we organize leadership series, where industry stalwarts are brought to interact with our students and solve their queries regarding corporate culture, working and expectations. We also have alumni mentors to train, groom and guide our students on various things. Lastly, we have Ideation Lab, where students and faculty come together and try to build innovative solutions for business problems.

What are some of the biggest challenges you see for higher education in general?

"Developing students focus towards studies in this era of hybrid learning"

I believe that the biggest challenge for higher education is to keep students engaged in studies in this era of digitised economy. As we all are aware that technology is developing every day and something new comes up, and it has not left even the education sector because hybrid learning mode is already there. So keeping in mind the same thing, the institute also may have to shape their program to suit the current need.

Any suggestions which you would like to give to the current youth and aspiring students?

I would like to advise my students to stay disciplined, passionate and sincere while working hard to fulfill their goals because once gone this time will never come back and consistency will help you to grow in any domain be it personal or professional life.
