Dr. Shishir Kumar Behera is working as Dean, School of Chemical Engineering (SCHEME) at VIT University, Vellore. He is a prominent educationist holding a Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering from University of Ulsan and has several years of teaching and research experience. His research interest includes the development and application of physico-chemical and biological technologies for water, wastewater and waste management, industrial ecology, and predictive modelling of engineered ecosystems.

“Exposure to industrial world and better understanding”

Students, via different programs, get chance to work with well experienced faculty specialized in different domains and get exposed to various state of the art laboratory facilities. Industrial Guest Lectures and Industrial Visits are arranged to prepare the students well aware about the contemporary issues and their solutions. Students are exposed to international education system through Adjunct professors’ scheme that helps them gain necessary skills accordingly. 


What are some valuable insights of the program that you are? 

“Foreign collaborations and improving skill sets”

We are offering latest engineering programs like B.Tech. – Chemical Engineering. Students are exposed to SAP (semester abroad program) wherein they pursue their final year project in universities abroad. A series of Thon-activities and industrial conclaves are conducted to make the students industry ready along with this program. We create employability skills among students with strong industry connect and entrepreneurship training. 


How did you train your faculty to deliver the program to the students? 

“Research oriented and developmental programs”

Faculty are trained through various Faculty Development Programs (FDPs) through Academic Staff College on a regular basis. Faculty are encouraged to visit Research laboratories at various National/International level institutions to upgrade their knowledge in the emerging research areas.

How do you tend to build an industry connect with the course curriculum? 

“Conducting ample learning with high industrial integration and research”

The industries were given access to identify budding students who can troubleshoot their problems through latest innovative techniques with new methodologies. Much industry support events are conducted to groom them as potentially positive graduates. These foster good relations and stimulate the development and commercialize their cutting-edge inventions as well. Students interested to pursue higher studies are trained in the latest research areas and motivated to publish their work in peer-reviewed international journals of repute as a part of their final year project work. Students are given ample opportunity to involve in various industrial projects also. 


What are projects that the students are working on through this program?

“Various industrial and technical world projects”

Students are working on Individual/ Group projects to solve real world problems through TARP (Technical Answers for Real World Problems), that is being offered along with classroom structure. Students are effectively progressing with Industry/In house projects during their final semester that aid them gain relevant skills and expose to natural environments. Students are working with faculty to do mini projects as vocational training during vacations and semester gaps.
