Dr. P.SRIJOTHI-VELS INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE TECHNOLOGY AND ADVANCED STUDIES-HOD

Dr. P.Srijothi completed her Ph.D. from Anna University in March 2013. She has more than 16 years of teaching experience at several institutions. She also has published more than 25 research articles in reputed journals throughout her career. She is currently teaching at the VELS Institute of Science and Technology where she is also the HOD of the Visual Communication department.

What is the latest program that you are offering in your Vels University/Visual Communication department which will help students outperform and stand apart from the crowd?

The latest programs we have started are B.Sc Visual Communication, M.Sc Viscom, Diploma in Viscom, B.Sc Game designing, B.Sc Visual Effects. All the courses are exclusively framed to meet industry standards. We have especially curated interesting elective papers to make students specialize in their interest area. 

What are the factors that make this program the best for the students to opt for?

Our courses are specially designed to help students become career ready. The salient features of our institute are the superior Infrastructure, Quality education by competent and experienced faculty, etc. We also provide students with the latest equipment for practicals and industry interaction during live projects to train them for better placements. All these features make our course highly beneficial for students to opt for. 

What will you say are the “best practices” in the course you’re offering?

Our courses are designed as per the highest industry standard. We provide internship training programs where the students can work in the industry and gain more skills by meeting industry experts. We have also created many elective papers to help the students gain more specializations and attain a thorough knowledge of their domain. 

What are some valuable insights into the program that you are offering at your Vels University/ Visual Communication dept?

Our aim is to train students in various relevant disciplines and make them meet the demand of the industry. We have several courses in the domain of Copywriting, Multimedia, Visual effects, Radio Production 3D Animation in Maya Scriptwriting, Television production with green screen shooting experience, etc. These are some of the important programs that we are offering to students currently. 

How does the program ensure that students are being prepared for the future?

We give our students training and provide interactive sessions to develop their analytical and creative thinking skills. They are also taught other relevant skills which help them during their jobs. Moreover, we also have a placement drive program to help students get 100 percent placement assistance.

How did you train yourself/faculty to deliver this program to the students?

All the staff in the department undergo a Faculty development program and update themselves regularly with working experience in the industry. We also regularly have seminars and conferences to help our faculty stay up to date with the new things happening in our discipline. Also, our faculty always keeps learning from the digital library that we have.

How do you tend to build an industry connection with this program? 

We want our course to be relevant to the industry. For that purpose, we have signed MoU with several companies and institutions like the MAAC/Crescendos, LV Prasad Media Studies, DA Vinci Media, Anipix Animation, and Hybrid 360 Tech. We conduct research and training to meet the industry standard with collaborative programs.

What were the challenges that you faced while inculcating this program into your curriculum?

Our department did not face any particular problem. We were lucky to have really good management support. It helped us build a robust infrastructure with the latest equipment to meet the new demands of the industry. Moreover, our highly trained faculty and other staff were also really helpful in managing any small problems that did occur.

What are the types of projects that the students are working on through this program?

We believe in imparting practical knowledge along with theoretical teaching. For this purpose, we have several projects for the students to participate in to polish their first-hand knowledge. Projects ranging from Photography, TV program production, Film Making, Video Editing, Reporting, Videography, Audiography, 2D and 3D Animation, Computer graphics, Visual effects, Advertisement, Radio Production, etc. are there to help students become better acquainted with their underlying concepts.

What are the benefits and career options after pursuing this course?

There are plenty of opportunities in the Media field after the completion of this course. Students can get opportunities in the Print Medium, Radio Medium, Television Medium, Cinema Industries, Advertising, Public Relations, etc. We also help students get placed through special placement drives. Even during the course, we encourage students to undertake internships to increase their chances of getting placed after their courses.
