Dr Arun Kumar is the Prof. & Dean in the Computer Science and Engineering Department at the School of Engineering, SPSU, Udaipur. He has completed B.E. (Electronics), M.E. (Computer Science and Engineering) and has a Ph.D. (Computer Science and Engineering) with a specialization in Computer Vision and Image Processing. His role includes teaching Post Graduate B.Tech students, design and updation of C.S.E course curriculum. He aims to provide the best in class technical education to all the learners at SPSU.

What are your roles and responsibilities towards the students?

“Deliver the course outcomes well to achieve measurable results"

The role of a teacher in an educational institute is multifaceted. Besides teaching, the teacher has to ensure accurate learning with respect to the course being taught. The teacher has to ensure that the student is made capable to apply those learned fundamentals to produce applications. Ultimately, the course outcomes of the subject must achieve the set measurable outcomes for the specific program being run by the institute. This is a minor step towards achieving the Vision and Mission of the institute.

How do you tend to establish healthy relations with the students and fellow faculty?

“By motivating the students and faculty to take up responsibilities for institute level events”

 A healthy relationship can be maintained by: 

  • Having regular interaction with all the members at least once a week via mobiles/emails or personal interactions. 
  • Participating in regular institutional activities, meetings and sharing our views.
  • Motivating everyone to take up challenges for their betterment and society at large.

How do you try to bring in a practical approach towards subjects?

“Case-based studies, open discussions and skill-based education”

The subjects can be given a practical approach and made industry-oriented by: 

  • Designing appropriate course objectives and achievable course outcomes. 
  • Searching and discussing industry-relevant case studies in the class. 
  • Motivating the students to provide their ideas and feasible solutions to the problems discussed in the class. 
  • Adding the elements of group discussions and presentations in the class.

How do you strategize the curriculum and how often it gets updated?

“Annually updated syllabus with a focus on project-based learning”

  • Updates to the curriculum are made almost every year. 
  • New components are added as per the industry requirements. 
  • New techniques and strategies like Flipped classroom, Project-based learning, and case studies are added as per the suggestions from the faculty members

Do you have any extracurricular activities to enhance the skills of the students?

“Student clubs for pursuing various interests and practical academic activities”

  • The students can participate in Hackathons and coding events organized by the Institute.
  • The students are motivated to participate in Paper Presentations in conferences and journals. 
  • The college regularly organizes club based activities for various hobbies.

To what extent does your department's education face challenges to improve its quality?

“There is a need to bridge the gap between curriculum and industry needs” 

The reluctance of students towards self-learning is the biggest problem. Also, the curriculum is not based on current trends in the industry. Assessment is focused more on theory. To address these, syllabus gap analysis is done and communicated to the university. Also, adaptation of OBE will help to assess students better.

  • Study well and focus on grasping your fundamentals well. 
  • As a student from a technical background prepare for mathematical and logical reasoning 
  • Read News Papers and understand the requirements of the industry. 
  • Hone up your communication skills and participate in extracurricular activities organized by the institute.
