All the students and faculty of NITTE Meenakshi Institute of Technology (NMIT) quickly become accustomed to the online teaching/learning scenario by using Google and Microsoft academic licensed-based products extensively with the help of NIMT domain email IDs. With the teachers trying their level best to keep the learning process uninterrupted during the pandemic time, the students were encouraged to participate actively through polling, replying through the chat window, and question-answer sessions. NMIT is always open to exploring new online tools which facilitate better teaching and learning experience. Our teachers are utilizing a range of tools – from Microsoft teams, Google Meet, Cisco Web-x, e-Shikshana, etc.

Strictly enforcing all safety measures on the campus following all sanitary and safety measures prescribed by the University, State, and Central Governments, the COVID Cell at NMIT has been working round the clock by taking care of minute things like placing hoardings/notices at every corner of the college displaying the dos and don’ts during the pandemic. Regular meetings have been conducted with the faculty members, who were connected through their devices, to discuss various problems and come up with innovative solutions. “Since the beginning of the pandemic, the college has encouraged the online mode. The faculty have regular meetings to improve the teaching via virtual classrooms. Students are also being encouraged to participate in various online hackathons”, said Dr. Nagraj.

Adapting to the New Normal

Coming up with proctored exams during the lockdown, the teachers of NMIT came up with a solution where exams are taken with proctoring software monitors on one’s computer’s desktop, webcam, video, and audio. NMIT ensured that research meetings did not halt due to the growing uncertainty. NMIT’s research centers are conducting doctoral committee research meetings through the online mode. Plus, the college is conducting webinars regularly. Laboratory sessions are organized at regular intervals, NMIT has come up with Virtual Labs, initiated by the Ministry of Education, Government of India, under the National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). NMIT teachers used Virtual Labs to demonstrate the experiments to students during the times of the pandemic. Also, the teachers and students have been encouraged to undergo Mass Online Oriented courses of varying lengths depending on their areas of interest.

Started in 2001, NMIT is one of the renowned engineering institutions of the country in general and known as the premier institution in Karnataka in particular. This institution is affiliated with the Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) and Approved by UGC/AICTE/Govt. of Karnataka with the great vision of serving the people by catering to the needs of the engineering profession in the Global market. NMIT offers a wide range of academic programs comprising seven UG and eight PG programs in Engineering besides MBA, MCA, and Doctoral programs of VTU and University of Mysore. Check: NMIT Courses and Fees

NMIT’s qualified team of competent and committed faculty has created an academic ambiance in the area of technical education. Recognizing its performance in both teaching and research, University Grants Commission (UGC) has been granted autonomous status since 2007. NMIT also got accredited at the “A-Grade” by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) and Four UG programs accredited by the National Board of Accreditation under Tier-1 for three years from the year 2014.

NMIT students Participated in prestigious International/ National Project competitions, winning numerous awards. The institution has established five Multi-Disciplinary Research Centers for Small Satellite Research, Robotics Research, Nanomaterial & MEMS, Computational Fluid Dynamics, and Design Engineering & Process Simulation. “The Thrust areas of Research are Small Satellites/Robotics/Image & Video Processing /CFD/Nano Technology/MEMS/Design & Process Simulation / Cloud Computing/ Big Data Analytics/IoT etc., which has resulted in a good number of quality publications in reputed peer-reviewed International Journals/Conferences, Patents and Awards”, says Dr. Nagaraj.

Academic autonomy has enabled the institute to formulate the outcome-based curriculum, teaching, and learning process leading to innovation & creativity. Check: NMIT Admission

Shaping Industry Competent Engineers

Bridging the gap between academia and industry is vital in today’s changing times. Understanding the current trends and skill requirements of the Job Market, NMIT conducts FDPs, Webinars, Guest Lectures, Webinars, Workshops, provides internships, projects, and introduces subjects as electives. Collaborating and engaging with the industry through their Industry-Institute Initiatives and connections, NMIT is reaching out to companies to seek their inputs and understand the current and required skills for the industry. Believing in outcome-based education, the institution has incorporated the same into their academics and make their students industry-ready. “We have provided our students with Internships, FDP, and Latest Technologies, during their 3rd and 4th year along with the seminars, industry projects, and guest lectures”, adds Dr. Nagaraj.

The Placement cell of NMIT successfully attracts a large number of reputed Industries for on-campus placements and conducts training programs in the areas of soft skills, analytical & problem-solving abilities, and leadership qualities to enhance the competence of students and bridge the gap between academia and industry. With almost 80% of IT and 40% Non-IT students getting placed every year, Global Hiring at NMIT has also been picking up in the last two years, with 20+ students getting placed in Japanese companies. The students have secured jobs in well-reputed companies like Nutanix SED, Atkins, Tata Power, Amazon Developers, Refintiv, Sobha, IG (Aerospace), PWC, Capgemini, Unisys, Infosys, Wipro, Thomson Reuters, and Accenture, to name a few.

NMIT is well known for its undergraduate engineering courses. It perfectly uses online tools like Google meet, Cisco Web-X, Microsoft teams to continue the learning process of the students during pandemic times. Several Question-Answer sessions were organized to meet the demands of students for clearing their doubts. It has come up with Virtual Labs to give practical knowledge to the students. It provides its student's knowledge in both practical and theoretical domains. Therefore, after seeing so many efforts of the college for its students. One can say that It is forming the base for innovative engineers.
