Dr Anand Kumar Sinha is the Dean Student Welfare of Birla Institute of Technology. He has been committed to serving BIT, Mesra for 30 years. He takes pride in being a part of the education sector where he can make a positive impact on the student's lives. 

What is your philosophy of leadership? How would you describe your leadership style?

“I believe in teamwork”

The main job of the Dean is to look after the residential stay of students and the student activities. The main philosophy of the Dean is uniform behaviour with all students and justice for all. The main objectives of the Dean are to make the quality of life of the students better and to facilitate the students to upgrade their knowledge, skill, and attitude while participating in various students activities including sports activities and thus contributing in their learning outcomes.

Any insights into how BIT Mesra could be more welcoming to students of different races or economic backgrounds?

“Our diverse policies accommodate students with any kind of background”

The admission policy of our Institute is such that 50% of the seats in all programmes are reserved for the home state. The rest 50% of the seats are open to other states. This facilitates a diverse mix of students from all parts of the country. The students come from different social and economic backgrounds but when they stay on the campus they are all the same. There is no discrimination from the Institute or among the students and we follow the concept of unity in diversity in its true sense. The students also get the opportunity to work in a team consisting of members from different social and economic backgrounds. 

What do you think your roles and responsibilities to the College and the students are?

“Maintaining a balance between the individual student’s career and the overall interest”

The role of the Dean is very crucial for both the Institute and the students. The Dean is also responsible for the wellbeing of students, both physical and mental, student discipline, scholarship and financial assistance, counselling, anti-ragging measures etc. If there is any lapse on part of the Dean and the team then it may create a nuisance, student unrest, and many unpleasant situations which may disrupt the normal academic activities of the Institute.

What do you think should be the college’s top priority over the next 10 years?

“The sole objective is having better quality and better outcome”

In simplest words, the top priority of our Institute would be an improvement in quality. We are finalising 25 points on which we would be working during the next 5 years. We want to achieve academic excellence and improve our NIRF rank. The student strength is likely to be increased. The intake in flagship B.Tech. programmes, where employment opportunities are more, will increase and so will the seats in M.Tech. and PhD programmes. New construction of academic buildings, hostels, and quarters for faculty members will be undertaken in the coming years. We are also committed to enhancing the quality of life of students by adding more hostels, improvement in hostel mess, housekeeping, and other campus amenities. 

What would you like people to know about your university they may not know?

“We are committed to imparting quality technical education”

Birla Institute of Technology is Deemed to be University under Section 3 of the UGC Act. It attained the status of an Autonomous College in 1972 and a Deemed to be University in 1986. Birla Institute of Technology is a non-profit Institution and the fees are just sufficient to meet the recurring expenditure. Although the institute fee is more than that in the Government Institutes, it is less as compared to other reputed Non-Government Institutes. During the next 5 to 10 years, the institute will grow further and attain new heights.

What do you see as BIT Mesra College’s greatest strengths?

“Visionary plans for future expansion and quality improvement”

Birla Institute of Technology is having a glorious past. We have been in existence for more than 6 decades. The faculty members and students are of good quality. The Institute has a large campus with lush green environment. The student learning outcomes are good and hence the placement is also good. All technical programmes are accredited by the National Board of Accreditation. 

Any suggestions you would like to give to the current youth and the aspiring students?

“Both physical and mental wellbeing is necessary to enjoy life”

My suggestions to the current youth and aspiring students are that they should get involved in their studies with proper interest. They should have a balanced life which consists of the study, sports, yoga, entertainment including internet and social media. Excess of anything is not good. One should try to attain a balance in his/her life. Lifelong learning and continuous improvement are key to a successful professional career and a happy life.

What are some plans that you’re currently (or will be) designing for BIT Mesra international affairs and/or students?

“Global exposure for the students will help them emerging as competent professionals”

We are already collaborating with a few reputed foreign universities where the B.Tech. students can do their summer internship after the sixth semester. The cost of this is equally shared by the BIT Mesra, BITMAA-NA (BIT Mesra Alumni Association - North America), and the parents. We would like to have more such collaboration for both student exchange and faculty exchange programmes. Also, we would like to have more foreign students on our campus.

How do you tend to establish a healthy relation and environment in BIT Mesra?

“The environment is conducive for study and other academic activities”

The relationship among various persons including students, faculty members, and support staff has always been cordial. Many student activities are held on the campus including few mega-events. All these are perfect examples of teamwork. As Dean, it is my duty to further improve the interpersonal relationships and work environment during the entire student life cycle.
