What is your philosophy of leadership? How would you describe your leadership style?

“A leader instills confidence in the team and drives them to achieve greater results”

According to me true leadership is an in born quality. One cannot attain the qualities of leadership through training or practice. True leaders are visionary personalities. They translate their visions into realities.

In a global perspective and in our nation as well, last two decades have seen drastic changes in education sector with the privatization from school level to university. The four stage stake holders in this education system, namely students, parents, faculty members (and other staff members) and the management must have a coordination to bring out the best from the future of the nation or the back bone of the nation.

  • Inculcation of values in the young mind is another aspect. The ethics and values in human mind are diminishing. Education may be need based or value based. Need based education has short term effect where primary focus on true education becomes secondary.
  • Another important aspect or quality that a true leader should not possess is the mean mindedness. He / she who has broad mind can only be true leader. A leader should not express what he or she has done by his word of mouth; it is his or her deeds which speak on one’s ability.

To describe my working style, I would like to highlight that I have always tried my best to walk along with all stake holders. I have always insisted on imparting quality education with moral values. My belief is that all stake holders must be happy and it is the only way for an academic institution to reach the pinnacle.

How does the curriculum of Abacus Institute of Engineering and Management ensure the best practices of industry?

“Students are given exposure via pragmatic learning to accelerate their pace of learning”

Abacus Institute of Engineering and Management believes in overall development of students through curriculum wise teaching or through co-curricular and extracurricular activities. When a student takes admission, we assure the candidate as well their parents that now onwards he/she is a family member of AIEM family and hence the all-round development of the candidate is our goal.

We follow the syllabi of MAKAUT. The syllabus of MAKAUT is largely changed recently with the incorporation of latest updates in theory portion as well as in practical sessions. Since the science and technology are advancing by leaps and bounds, corporates are in a lookout of candidates who are industry ready. Concepts of training after absorption in industry have become obsolete. So, the training sessions those were used to be carried out in industries earlier is now conducted in our institute. We convert raw student in to a fully corporate or industry ready. Considering all these aspects bookish knowledge is not sufficient. Now the concept of “Knowledge beyond Book” is in the job market.

“Many of our students from almost all of our departments are pursuing Masters and Doctorate degrees from foreign countries with scholarships. Every year some of our students going abroad for higher studies.”

Any insights into how your institution could be more welcoming to students of different races or economic background?

“We make sure that students resonate and mingle with each other for a greater purpose”

India is a country with multiple races and people from different economic background. In this condition my institute becoming more welcoming or friendly for the students of different races and economic background is a bit challenging. Our placement record during the last three years has appeared to be excellent. Total number of companies visited or conducted campus interviews during 2018 - 2019 and 2019 - 2020 are 80 and 84. The number is really attractive in partly recession period.

Another important aspect is the course fee. It is affordable as compared to other competitive college offering BTech degrees. Our management i.e. JIS Group and Techno India Group with the intension to help the weaker section of the society who cannot afford higher fee structure of some of the colleges in Eastern India have kept the fees structure slightly lower than other competitive institutes.

What do you think should be AIEM’s top priority over the next 10 years?

“We want to sustain and develop new partnerships and acquaintances for a prosperous growth”

The main motto of AIEM is sustainable growth during the coming 5-10 years. We would like to offer high quality education at competitive price. To achieve this, we have to enhance the student enrolment and retention by maintaining the quality of the program. There are multiple other aspects which we want to achieve in this journey:

  • In academics, our students are performing excellent at University examinations and various national level examinations. Our target is to continue with these and in future perform better than that of the present.
  • We recruit best faculties in our departments who can teach the students such that they can dominate the engineering fraternity. We also would like to create a research environment where teachers and the students will work together for the solution of future problems.
  • Job market is vulnerable; still we are providing 80-90 campus hiring per year during the last three years to our final year students. Our objective is to enhance the number to more than 100 or to 125-150 per year.

Fostering relationships are key to the success of all organizations. Without the strength of its relationships with its all partners, alumni, corporates visits for the recruitment, Abacus Institute of Engineering and Management would be far less able to fulfill its mission and to reach towards its vision. Hence, in next 10 years, AIEM will continue to create and develop relationships.

“My first vision was to see my college become a renowned academic institution at the regional level. Secondly, the academic standard of the institution will be high and the students will inevitably learn from this environment.”

What are some of the biggest challenges you see, both for higher education in general and for Abacus Institute of Engineering and Management, specifically?

“We are making sure to elevate the standard of education and provide a launching pad to our students”

There is work required to be done at the ground level. The basic problem is in the higher education sector in India, which includes: lack of adequate infrastructure and facilities; large number of vacancies in faculty positions, lower rate in student enrolment, backdated teaching methods, falling in research standards, uninterested students, overloaded classrooms and imbalances in extensive geographic, cultural and socio-economic conditions.

Another challenge that the higher education sector is facing is the multiplication in the number of higher education institutions in India and an increase in students' intake. On the contrary, the growth in terms of improvement in quality is yet to be attained. Some fundamental issues related to Higher Education in India are the following:

  • Poor Teaching Quality
  •  Lack of required funding
  • Privatization
  • Non-Project based learning

Although AIEM recruits best faculties from graduated engineers but finding quality in them is a big challenge. Secondly, the lack of research mindedness of faculty is another issue. Higher education, especially in science and technology sector research, plays a crucial role in teaching of a teacher. Another issue that most of the higher education institutions face is the enrollment of students and their retention. For sustainable growth, both should improve with time.
