UBC is much more than what I imagined

I chose UBC for its flexibility in switching between faculties and programs. I wasn't sure I wanted to major in science at the time of applying. After my second year of university, I ended up switching to another faculty and pursuing another major. I also chose UBC for its international student support and inclusive culture. It also has a very beautiful campus which is one of its main attractions (surrounded by ocean and mountains). UBC is one of the top 3 Canadian universities and is on the west coast making its weather very adjustable.

Course Curriculum :

The curriculum requires you to take many different requirements and electives that may not be related to your major, e.g communication. I think this is great as it widens your perspective/options and lets you try new courses. However, it may make it less flexible to take the courses that you really wanted to try since your timetable will get overcrowded and you are not allowed to take more than a certain amount of credits per year.

Exams :

For my application, I had to submit my transcript and a personal profile. A personal profile consisted of about 5 questions related to academic/non-academic interests and past experiences. The questions were for example "tell us about an experience that taught you something about yourself and the world around you. What have you done to challenge yourself intellectually?" The best answers require personal reflections and making them your own. The admission office values when you show who you are and what you are really passionate about.

Placement :

COOP program allows students to extend their degree and give them more exposure to jobs. There are many seminars, advising, and workshops for graduating students to prepare them for the work-force.

Internship :

I will be applying to Co-op this year.

Fees :

One year tuition is approximately CAD 37000.

Scholarship :

Yes, Outstanding International Student (OIS) Award. One time award for CAD$8000. I was just given this award based on my academic and extra-curricular in high school. I didn't apply for it.

Faculty :

I switched from a large faculty of Science to a smaller Faculty of Land and Food Systems (LFS). LFS is much more closely knit and allows for interactions between fellow students and professors. You are also exposed to more opportunities and support. The faculty and staff are all very enthusiastic and approachable.

Hostel :

Yes, I live in on-campus housing which is less expensive compared to housing near campus. The infrastructure is new and I have had no bad experiences. The residence life support, infrastructure of buildings, accessibility to transit, and food options are great. Living near campus is much more expensive and difficult to find. However, living slightly away from campus 20 min bus ride will get you much cheaper accommodation (basement suits/small apartments)
