Raunak Basak Review at The University Of British Columbia [UBC], Vancouver | Collegedunia

Feels awesome to be a part of UBC.

The university is one of the highest-ranked universities in the world. The faculty here is highly qualified and the research conducted here is of the best quality and ingenious. It's a highly competitive and sought-after university and I'm lucky to secure admission here.

Course Curriculum :

The course curriculum is evenly distributed. The students have the freedom to choose any course they like and can even drop the course within a certain deadline if they feel so.

Exams :

The application consisted of selecting the desired program, mentioning my previous research experience along with an SOP, CV, LORs, and Transcript records. I had done 3 internships in my undergrad which included the Mitacs Globalink Research Internship in Canada in the summer of 2019 and thus I mentioned them in my application in the past research experience. I had given 2 academic LORs ( Professors) and 1 Industrial LOR (R&D head at an Atomic Research Laboratory under DAE, Govt of India). In my SOP, I had also written about what I wish to pursue in the future and the professors I wish to work with citing their works and papers which I found pretty interesting. A professional from the Mechanical Engineering dept took great interest in my application and asked me if I wish to join his lab. I agreed and he scheduled an interview. The interview lasted for about 90mins in which he asked me about everything that I had written on my CV. I guess he wanted to know how much work had I done in my internships and what my inferences were. It might have been possible that he also wanted to know about the ingenuity of my works.

Placement :

All the companies which are operating in Vancouver and Canada in general recruit students from our campus. In most organizations, there are campus recruiters who are dedicated to UBC campus recruitments only.

Internship :

My program doesn't have a co-op component but one may choose to go for an internship with a consultation with the supervisor.

Fees :

Tuition fees is 9000 CAD per year

Scholarship :

I have received the Graduate Research Assistantship, the International Tuition Award, and the Mitacs Graduate Fellowship award. The first two awards are a part of the program that every successful candidate receives from the university and the Mitacs Graduate Fellowship is awarded to all past Mitacs Globalink Research Interns who go back to Canada to pursue graduate studies.

Faculty :

I guess the Faculty-Student ratio is pretty good. For a Graduate level course, the maximum number of students in a class is 20. The faculty and staff are easily approachable. You just need to drop a mail to them and they would schedule an online meeting if the email doesn't do the job completely.

Hostel :

I am looking for a stay outside the campus. The rooms inside the campus are pretty costly and thus staying a bit away from campus would help me get rooms at a better rate. (800 CAD per month)
