University of British Columbia is one of the top Canadian University and I was told that Engineering school in UBC is excellent overall. Another reason is that I lived in Vancouver so I wanted to go to a close college/university and UBC was the best option in Vancouver area. Therefore I chose the University of British Columbia.
Course Curriculum
Most classes in UBC Chemical Engineering program are based on theoretical knowledge, yet in 3rd year we are given a chance to go to a field trip where we can go visit some actual workplaces. I've been told that a lot of students were inspired by the field trip, so I would say that the Curriculum has a good industrial exposure to students.
Exams
Canadian High School Average in Grade 12: minimum 92-93% for Engineering Math (Pre-Calculus 12), English 12, Physics 12, Chemistry 12 are required as basic classes for the admission to Engineering Minimum TOFEL score: 90 out of 120
Placement
I have not yet had a related experience. Therefore N/A
Events
A good thing about UBC is that there's quite a lot of clubs available. They are very diverse and accepting. Libraries are well organized and plenty of study spaces are available. There's also a lot of study spaces in each residence so technically students can study everywhere on campus. WiFi is also available all over the campus and it's for free even for visitors. There's a lot of sport facilities including soccer field, rugby field, gym, swimming pool, ice hockey stadium. Sport team in UBC is called UBC Thunderbird.
Scholarship
Yes. I got the International Entry Award which is $25,000 in CAD. This award is given to international students whose highschool GPA is outstanding and has a decent amount of extracurriculum such as volunteer works and leadership experiences.
Faculty
Student ratio in Chemical Engineering: 52 (Female) : 48 (Male) There are boring and incapable professors yet there are also decent amount of passionate and helpful professors. It's about like half and half. Saloome Motavas; when I was in first year of Engineering, she was teaching Electromagnetism and I was amazed by how mature and calm she was in terms of dealing with noisy students in class. Not only that but also she was very capable of teaching and gave a lot of resources for the course. Thanks to her, I ended up getting an A+ in her class. She is a very effective instructor.
Hostel
I lived on campus in my first year. Residence is mandatory for all 1st yeat UBC students and mostly they share a washroom with their roommates but a room itself (it's called connected single room). First year students are not allowed to cook in their rooms; that's why there's not a kitchen in all the first year student residences. The average cost of residence is around $8,000 CAD but a meal plan is mandatory too which costs around $4,000 CAD.
