Gain knowledge and skills in the physical, sociological, and environmental sciences to understand marine and terrestrial ecosystems and the practices needed to maintain the integrity of these systems
Building on the natural science courses in the EVST core, coursework in the Ecological Systems Specialization includes a choice of courses in physical and ecological science and field exploration in diverse Pacific Northwest habitats.
Numerous internships are available to students in the areas of government, business, nonprofit and agricultural operations.
Many of the relevant course options in Ecological Science are in the Biology Department, so Seattle strongly encourages students pursuing this specialization to consider completing a minor in Biology.
Learning outcomes:
- Learn the problem-solving, decision-making, and communication skills needed to address today's pressing, contemporary environmental challenges
- Engage with faculty from across disciplines to explore and understand the socio-economic, spiritual, ethical, and biophysical complexities of human-environment systems
- Integrate fieldwork and classwork to investigate the social and ecological dimensions of sustainability
- Specialize in a specific area of sustainability-related to a professional field: Environmental Education and Communication; Politics, Policy, and Justice; Urban Sustainability or Ecological Systems
- Gain practical tools and real world experience through internships, fellowships and education abroad

Academic Eligibility:

Undergraduate applicants should have the equivalent of a U.S. grade-point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
Provide official, certified English language translations of all transcripts from each educational institution attended.
- Official external mark sheets should be submitted as part of the evaluation process in the educational system attended. Transcripts must have the official seal or stamp from the issuing institution.
- Students who have completed the Ordinary and/or Advanced Levels, or the International Baccalaureate must have the results sent directly from the testing agency.
Applicants whose native language is other than English must demonstrate English proficiency regardless of the length of residency in the U.S., their citizenship, or their immigration status.
Seattle University does not require the ACT or SAT of international freshman applicants. However, these scores do enhance an application, and sufficiently high critical reading and writing scores will be accepted in lieu of the TOEFL to demonstrate English proficiency.
