- Students in LMU's English major become attuned to the pleasures and purposes of writing through careful reading of and writing about literature with a focus on both critical and creative uses of language. English majors are engaged with the most rigorous, demanding, and subtle modes of language and are immersed in literature's profound expression of human experience.
- The study of English at LMU can be summed up in one word: WORD! English is a discipline that inspires majors to become both students and disciples of the written word. Through careful reading of and writing about literature, and with attention to both critical and creative uses of language, students become attuned to the pleasures and purposes of writing. The English major engages students in the most rigorous, demanding, and subtle modes of language, and immerses them in literature’s profound expression of human experience. The LMU English department educates students in the history of literature in English, encourages them to develop their own voice and style, and provides deep practice in critical reading and writing in preparation for graduate study and a diverse range of professions.
- LMU English majors intensively engage in reading and writing literature. English majors take courses that challenge them to deepen their understanding of expression and experience. LMU’s students enroll in classes that take them on the road or into the streets, reading and writing and teaching literature in the Los Angeles community and beyond. LMU’s professors push students to master interpretive and creative skills that both prepare them for professional life and open them to a lifetime of reading and writing that brings wisdom, wonder, and fulfillment. These skills serve English majors well in graduate and professional studies in fields ranging from poetry to the law. Eligibility & Entry Requirement
Academic Eligibility:
- International students are not required to submit the SAT or ACT to complete their application to LMU. Strong candidates for admission who do not provide these scores will provide alternate assessments of their academic abilities such as International Baccalaureate (IB) courses, Advanced Placement (AP) courses, A levels, or rigorous national examinations.
- Non-native English speakers must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) given by the Educational Testing Service and arrange for scores to be sent to the Office of Admission. As an alternative to taking the TOEFL, non-native English speakers may also take the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).

Submit your transcripts in English from all secondary schools/high schools attended. Full transcripts from each individual school year must be provided.
- Submit official transcripts showing all work in detail.
- LMU may grant advanced standing for certain foreign examinations and diplomas;
- Obtain certified English translations of all documents not presented in English.
- All documents submitted for admission become the property of the University and will not be returned.
