An empowers you to create a program of study that represents a distinctive vision. It’s ideal for highly motivated, passionate, self-directed students whose educational interests cannot be explored within existing majors and minors. The individualized major embraces the spirit of experimentation and innovation and enables you to explore emerging social, cultural, political, or scientific questions from the perspective of multiple disciplines.

Although your program will be unique, you won’t work alone. You’ll receive guidance on designing your major from your advisor, and you’ll get one-on-one attention from faculty in every discipline represented in your program. You’ll explore compelling questions in small classes that, considered holistically, will provide a rich, cohesive understanding of your area of interest. You’ll have the opportunity to engage in hands-on learning through off-campus internships. By the time you complete your senior capstone project, you’ll have the confidence to advocate for yourself and your vision.

Before applying for an individualized major, consult with your advisor about the possibility of pursuing your interests within an existing program. Most students find that an existing major is the best choice.
