Sikkim University is presently located in Gangtok, the capital town of Sikkim. The permanent campus measuring 300 acres is coming up at Yangang which is about 56 kms away from Gangtok in South Sikkim. The nearest airport is Bagdogra and railway station is New Jalpaiguri. 

The University currently operates from several hired buildings located along NH – 10. The main administrative office of the University is located at Samdur, 6th Mile, Tadong. Sikkim University has 17 colleges affiliated to it.

SSU Gangtok Admissions

Admissions in Sikkim University are done via a counselling process. 

How to Apply? 

  • Interested Candidates with minimum qualification may apply online for admission. 
  • Admission form costs Rs. 600 for General/OBC/EWS and Rs. 300 for ST/SC/PWD and shall be paid online.
  • All applications received online within the specified date shall be scrutinized and shortlisted by a duly constituted Working Committee for Admission (WCA) in terms of eligibility criteria / guidelines laid.
  • The merit list of all eligible applicants for Certificate & UG programme shall be prepared based on the marks obtained in the qualifying examination.
  • A programme – wise / department – wise merit list of selected candidates as per the central government reservation policy shall be then uploaded on the University website.
  • The selected students are then required to pay the fees and report to the university whenever instructed to.

Sikkim University has a very active Placement cum Coaching Cell .The Placement cum Coaching Cell of the University was established with the aim of providing employment opportunities to the students of Sikkim University along with the existing excellent academics. SSU Gangtok Scholarships

Sikkim University offers Merit-cum-Means scholarships for the students enrolled in the departments in various programmes. The eligibility for this scholarship is that the students should hold an Indian citizenship, should have an average family income of less than Rs. 60,000 per annum and should be receiving no other scholarship or financial assistance from any other sources. Students are to submit an application in prescribed form along with their parent's income certificate to the office of the Dean of Students’ Welfare (DSW). The applications are shortlisted as per norms by a Committee headed by the DSW and is submitted to the Vice-Chancellor for approval. Following Scholarships / Fellowships are available under this scheme:

  • Fellowship: Rs. 3000/- per month.
  • Free ship: Full tuition fee and laboratory fee waiver.
  • Half Free ship: 50 % tuition fee and laboratory fee waiver.

  • Central Library: Sikkim University Library is fully automated equipped with modern infrastructure and services required in a digital environment. All its services are web-enabled to reach the users wherever they are. It has its own website displaying all its resources and services available on mobile through its library app. It has more than 50,000 books and journals available in the printed and in the digital form. Sikkim University also provides a consortia with the all the major e-journals site available to the students for free.
  • Hostels: Sikkim University provides five hostels for girls and four hostels for boys. These are rented facilities and hence, the infrastructure may be perceived as modest. The hostels are however, equipped with basic facilities. There is a demand for hostels and not everyone will be accommodated.
  • Transportation: To overcome the limitation posed by the limited rooms in the hostels, for the convenience of the students, the university has provided them with uninterrupted, free, bus service to commute daily to the university.
  • Gymnasium: The University provides the students and the staff members with a well-kept gymnasium with proper equipment and trainers. These facilities are available at a nominal fee of 150/- for the students and 300/- for the staff members.
  • Healthcare: Sikkim University provides healthcare facilities to students, teachers, and employees of the University and their family members. These include outpatient facilities, Inpatient facilities, Emergency services and Dispensary.

Ques. What are the documents necessary for verification at the time of admission?

Ans. The documents necessary for verification at the time of admission are as follows:

  • Original Mark-sheet (s) of the qualifying examinations with one self-attested photocopies (both sides). 
  • Original certificate of proof of age and a self-attested copy of the same.
  • Original SC/ST/OBC/PWD/EWS certificate and a self-attested copy of the same.
  • Certificate of participation in sports/games of the last three years.
  • Original Migration Certificate (for students belonging to other School boards/University)

Ques. What is the Central Admission Test (CAT)?

Ans. CAT is conducted by the Sikkim University as an entrance test for the sole purpose of admission. However, this year in the view of the pandemic, the university has decided to not conduct CAT and admissions are to be given on the basis if marks scored in the qualifying examinations.

Ques. Can foreign nationals apply as well?

Ans. Yes, 10% of the seats are reserved for foreign nationals provided that they are allowed to visit and stay in Sikkim and are granted a visa by the Government of India. Citizens of Bhutan and Nepal are welcomed anytime. However, applicants belonging to Afghanistan, Bangladesh, China, Myanmar and Pakistan may be allowed only if it is specifically recommended by the Indian Council of Cultural Relations, Govt. of India under exchange programme.

Ques. What is the hostel fee that is to be paid?

Ans. If the applicants get selected for the hostel facilities, they will be required to pay a fee around 8000/- depending on the number of roommates they have. This fee includes a 3000/- refundable caution deposit.

Ques. Can an applicant be waived of 100% of their tuition fee?

Ans. Yes. If the applicants are differently – abled, wards of the people who sold their land in Yangang for the campus or are of the “Primitive Tribe” in Sikkim, the University offers a 100% tuition waiver. Some scholarships also provide a 100% free ship that the students can avail.
