VMOU PhD program is offered under various specializations such as Library and Information Science, Journalism, Commerce, Botany, Political Science, English, Public Administration, Geography, Sanskrit, Economics, Education, and Special Education. The basic eligibility criteria is to have a master’s degree from a recognized Board with a minimum of 55% aggregate marks. A relaxation of 5% will be given to students belonging to reservation categories. An entrance test will be conducted where students will need to score at least 50% marks to qualify.

VMOU PhD Eligibility Criteria

In order to be eligible for PhD admission at VMOU, candidates must fulfill the following requirements:

  • Candidates for admission to the Ph.D. program shall have a Master's degree or a professional degree declared equivalent to the Master’s degree by the corresponding statutory regulatory body, with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade 'B' in the UGC-7-point scale (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed) or an equivalent degree from a foreign educational Institution accredited by an Assessment and Accreditation Agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country for the purpose of assessing, accrediting or assuring quality and standards of educational institutions.
  • A relaxation of 5% of marks, from 55% to 50%, or an equivalent relaxation of grade, may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC(non-creamy layer)/Differently-abled and other categories of candidates as per the decision of the Commission from time to time, or for those who had obtained their Master's degree prior to 19th September 1991. The eligibility marks of 55% (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever the grading system is followed) and the relaxation of 5% to the categories mentioned above are permissible based only on the qualifying marks without including the grace mark procedures. 

VMOU PhD Admission Process

 Admission to the Ph.D. program at VMOU shall be made using the following methods:

  • For admission to the PhD program, VMOU Conducts its own entrance test Firstly, in the Subjects in which NET/SLET/JRF is not conducted by UGC. Secondly, if a sufficient number of applicants are not received under the category then the Entrance test shall be conducted for the subjects concerned. 
  • Candidates who clear the entrance test will then be called for a personal interview for final selection.
  • The PhD Entrance Test will have 70% weightage for entrance test marks and 30% for interviews.
  • Candidates holding valid scores in UGC-NET/UGC- CSIR/NET/GATE/CEED and similar national level tests are exempted from the VMOU PhD entrance test. Such candidates can directly appear for the interview.

Ques. Where are the test centers for the Ph.D. Entrance Exam?

Ans. The entrance exam for Ph.D. will be held at Kota. There are no other test centers.

Ques. Is the entrance exam for Ph.D. compulsory for everyone?

Ans. Yes, Candidates willing to enroll in the Ph.D. course should clear the pre Ph.D. exam irrespective of if they have cleared the NTA NET/CSIR/JRF

Ques. What is the minimum attendance rate for the coursework?

Ans. A candidate is expected to complete a period of 6 months of course work with at least 75% attendance.

Ques. Can foreign students apply for the courses by VMOU?

Ans. Yes, such students will be required to forward all the relevant documents by the respective embassy to the Director of the Regional Centre. The Embassy will have to state that it has no objection and the application form filled in is correct.

Ques. What are the fees to be paid by foreign students?

Ans. The Admission fee will be 5 times more than that of an Indian student. The fees paid by students of SAARC Nations will be 3 times more.
