Sambalpur University popularly known as Jyoti Vihar is situated in Sambalpur district of Odisha. The chancellor of the university is the State Governor of Odisha. Accredited with grade A by NAAC it is among one of the best universities to be admitted into. It finds its place in the rank band of 101-150.

The university offers a full-time Ph.D. program in 24 specializations in total. The candidates must have 55% in PG courses to be eligible for the Ph.D. program. The final admission is based on the entrance test conducted by the University.

Sambalpur University Ph.D. Eligibility Criteria

• The student must have a past three years course in any of the fields including arts, science, commerce or law from Sambalpur University or any equivalent University as certified by the UGC. The candidate must have an Honours in a particular subject with at least the minimum passing percentage.
• Those candidates whose results for the qualifying examination are awaited can also apply. However, they have to submit their Provisional Certificate and Mark sheet of the examination after the publication of the result of Sambalpur University or on the date of entrance test whichever is later, lest their cases for selection shall not be considered.
• The candidates who have already achieved a PG degree are not allowed to take admission in any of the PG courses however the same does not apply with M.tech candidates.

Admission to the Ph.D. Course at Sambalpur University are provided based on the Marks obtained by the candidates in the Ph.D. Entrance Test followed by Viva-Voce and Personal Interview.

Sambalpur University Ph.D. Exam Details 

The university conducts the Entrance Exam for Ph.D. admissions. The exam is conducted in two stages- Written Test and Viva-Voce. 

For the final selection, 60% weightage will be based on the score in Entrance Exam, 30% weightage will be based on Career marks, and 10% weightage will be based on Viva-Voce.

Entrance Exam Exemption 

• Candidates who are qualified for UGC, CSIR NET, GATE, ICMR or ICAR can exempt the Sambalpur University Entrance Test.
• Candidates with M.tech or M.Phil degree, by securing admission in these courses through Entrance examination.

Sambalpur University Ph.D. Placements

The University has a placement cell which acts as a channel between the students and the companies and social organisations which want to recruit the students from the University. As per the university's fiscal year report 2018-19, all total 25 companies recruited 15 on-campus placements and 10 off-campus placements. 

The highest package was of 6 lakh per annum while the lowest was 2.8 lacs per annum. All total 350 students participated in the placement recruitment out of which 65 students got pre-placement offers.
