Candidates seeking admission to North Orissa University PhD must have followed the below-mentioned criteria: 

  • Candidate must have hold of master’s degree in the concerned/relevant subject with not less than 55% of marks or its equivalent grade ‘B’ in UGC-7-point scale from a recognized university. Relaxation of 5% for SC/ ST/ OBC (non-creamy layer)/ Differently-abled

  • In order to register for a PhD program, Eligible candidates are required to attend an entrance test that is conducted annually, as well as a personal interview - 
  • However, candidates qualified with UGC-CSIR-NET/ GATE/ INSPIRE fellowships granted by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) of the Indian Government, and awardees of teacher fellowships are exempted from the aforementioned tests and only have to appear for the interviews.
  • M.Phil. degree holders applying for an M.Phil. Program are also exempt, provided they have been admitted to the program through other entrance tests as per the UGC (University Grants Commission) guidelines, 2009 and have studied Research Methodology as a paper during their previous program. 
  • Successful candidates will thus be eligible for PhD registration in their relevant subjects at the master’s level. Registrations in multidisciplinary or interdisciplinary subjects, I.e. subjects other than the one in which the master’s degree was obtained, will be discussed and determined by the Subject Research Committee (SRC).

  • The application form along with all relevant documents as well as the application form fee (in the form of a demand draft in favor of the Comptroller of Finance, North Orissa University, Payable at Baripada) must be submitted to the office of the Controller of Examination (COE) by registered post or by hand.
  • A Hard copy of the same application and supporting documents must be submitted to the invigilator at the time of appearing for the entrance test.
  • Selections are made on the basis of merit, and the COE will prepare a list of selected candidates on the basis of overall performance across the written tests and interviews.
  • The successful candidates are also personally notified by the COE and are directed to begin registrations for the Pre PhD Coursework.

North Orissa University PhD Program Details - Curriculum and Syllabus

Pre-PhD Course work

  • All the students admitted into the PhD course must have to enroll in, a Pre – PhD Course (PPC) related to their subject field.
  • The Pre PhD Coursework lasts for one semester or six months. Candidates are required to maintain a minimum attendance percentage of 75% in all classes, lectures, and labs. 
  • After completion of the PPC, the institute organizes written theory examinations of 3 hours, and practical examinations of up to 6 hours. While the answer scripts are generally evaluated by internal examiners, the college reserves the right to send answer papers to external examiners for evaluation purposes as well. 
  • To Pass the Pre PhD coursework, a student will have to secure at least 50% marks by aggregate, with a 2% grace mark in one or more theory papers that may be granted if necessary for the student to pass the examination. 
  • Candidates that fail the exam or wish to improve their performance can repeat the exam not more than two times in a period of 3 years from the time of admission into the said course. 
  • During the Pre PhD course, the student is expected to identify and defend a potential thesis and synopsis to be further explored during the actual Doctor of Philosophy program.
  • Candidates having an M.Phil/M.Tech degree is exempted from pursuing the Pre-PhD coursework.
