IIT Dhanbad PhD Eligibility Criteria

Candidates who seek admission to the various Ph.D. programs offered at IIT Dhanbad shall have the following eligibility:

  • Must have passed with a first-class division or minimum of 60% aggregate marks or CGPA of 6.0 in Master’s degree in Management or allied areas or Engineering or Technology, Science, Arts, Commerce. OR

IIT Dhanbad Ph.D. Admission Guidelines

The selection criteria for Admissions to the Ph.D. programs of the university are based on the GATE/NET/CAT/GMAT scores and further Interview or Written Ability Test/ screening test.

  • The first selection of the candidates will be based on qualifying degree and GATE/NET/CAT/GMAT scores.
  • The department may adopt a screening test if required based on the number of applications received.
  • Candidates who get shortlisted based on merit rank will be called for the interview process. The institute will display the list of shortlisted candidates on its official website in their respective departments.

Prescribed Coursework

Course Duration:

  • Full-time Ph.D. program for the students having Master’s Degree shall be of a minimum duration of 4 years divided into 8 semesters including coursework and a maximum of six years having 12 semesters.
  • Full-time Ph.D. program at IIT Dhanbad for the students having Bachelor’s Degree shall be of a minimum duration of 4.5 years divided into 9 semesters including coursework and a maximum of 7 years having 14 semesters

Course Work: Students are required to register for coursework in the first two semesters.

  • Ph.D. students having master’s degree shall choose a minimum of 8 courses from the prescribed syllabus.
  • Ph.D. students having a bachelor’s degree or master’s degree from different fields shall choose a minimum of 10 courses from the prescribed syllabus.
  • The minimum course work needs to be completed within the first four semesters, failing which the candidature is deemed to be terminated.
  • Ph.D. student shall have secured a minimum CGPA of 7.0.

Comprehensive Examination: After the successful completion of course work, a Ph.D. student is required to appear for the Comprehensive Examination.

  • The comprehensive examination is designed to test the overall comprehension of the student in the program registered for Ph.D.
  • Students shall clear the comprehensive written and oral examination with Satisfactory (S) grade.
  • Ph.D. students shall clear the examination within 6 months after the completion of their coursework.
  • Maximum of two attempts are allowed to clear the comprehensive examination, failing which the candidature is deemed to be terminated.

Research Proposal Seminar: After the successful completion of the comprehensive examination, Ph.D. student is required to deliver a research proposal seminar on the area of research before DSC within the 6 months of qualifying for comprehensive examination.

Research Work Credits: Ph.D. students are also required to earn 9 credits for each Ph.D. project/thesis unit the student is registered in the semester.

  • At the end of the semester, the supervisor and DSC will assess the student’s progress towards the project/thesis work during the semester and will award the grades.
  • S grade will be awarded for each unit if the work is satisfactory and X for every unsatisfactory unit.
  • Student’s supervisor will do the continuation evaluation at regular intervals.

IIT Dhanbad Ph.D. Scholarship

IIT Dhanbad also provides financial assistantship to full-time Ph. D. students who have qualified GATE or any other eligible national level examination in the form of teaching or research assistantships.

  • The Assistantships are awarded on a yearly basis for a period of up to five years.
  • The stipend for the assistantship is paid at the approved rates as specified by the MHRD
  • Additionally, Full-time Ph.D. students get financially supported by research projects and may avail of institute fellowship after completion of the project.
  • The eligibility for the same is that the student must have qualified GATE or any other eligible national level examination.
  • The maximum duration of fellowship in all such cases will be up to five years,

Ques. What are the eligibility criteria for having a Bachelor’s Degree from IIT?

Ans. Candidates shall have passed with a minimum of 70% aggregate marks in their degree qualifying examination. Also, they must have appeared for GATE or NET. However, if the candidate has acquired more than 80% aggregate marks, there will be no requirement for such candidates to appear for these entrance exams.

Ques. Can any student in the final year of my Master’s Degree apply for a Ph.D. program at IIT Dhanbad?

Ans. Yes. Candidates in the final year of the qualifying degree may be considered for provisional admission under an undertaking that they will present their results to the Institute on or before the date of admission.
