Latest Update: Himachal Pradesh University (HPU) Shimla has begun the admission procedure for admissions to Master of Computer Application (MCA) and Master of Technology (Computer Science). The university is inviting the candidates to upload the documents on the admission portal of HPU by November 11, 2020. Candidates can also submit a copy of their mandatory documents in hand at the University.

Himachal Pradesh University (HPU) Shimla offers a full-time Masters of Law (LL.M.) programme for the duration of 1 year in various streams.

  • The University offers Masters of Law (LL.M.) in 6 specializations namely Criminal law, Human Rights, Constitutional Law, International Law, Environmental Law, and Business Law.
  • The minimum requirement to apply for the LL.M. Program offered at HPU Shimla is a professional LLB degree.
  • The candidate shall have qualified for the Entrance Exam which is conducted by the University.

HPU L.L.M Eligibility Criteria

Candidates who wish to seek admission for the LL.M. Programme of HPU Shimla shall have passed the minimum eligibility criteria as mentioned below:

  • Candidates should have obtained their LL.B. (Professional) Degree.
  • Candidates who have done their Law graduation from other Universities in India shall be recognized as equivalent to the LL.B. Degree of Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla on a reciprocal basis.
  • Candidates will only be considered eligible if he/she has a consistent good academic record with first or high second class in LL.B. (Professional) Degree with at least 55% Marks in aggregate or B Plus in the grade system marks.
  • 5% relaxation to marks is given to the SC/ST/PWD candidates.
  • Candidates who have an equivalent degree from a foreign University.
  • The candidates who have appeared in the qualifying examination are also eligible to appear in the Entrance Examination provisionally.

HPU L.L.M Admission Guidelines

The selection criteria for Admissions to the LL.M. Programme of the university is strictly based on the merit-list obtained in the Entrance Test conducted by the University. Candidate can follow the below given process for 

  • Candidates are required to fill the application form available on the official website of HPU.
  • Candidates are also needed to pay the application fees online through online payment methods via Debit Card or Credit Card or Net Banking.
  • Candidates must have qualified the Entrance Test with a minimum of 50% aggregate marks.
  • 45% in case of SC/ST /PWD candidates.
  • Admission to subsidized seats as well as non-subsidized seats will be made as per the provisions under the Himachal Pradesh University.
  • The selected candidates based on merit-list will be called for counselling which will be notified by the University.
  • Candidates shall pay the counselling fees and get their documents verified in time.

The LL.M. Programme at HPU Shimla is offered in 6 different specializations for the duration of 1 year.

The entire LL.M. Program of HPU is divided into a full-time regular 2 semesters of 6 months each. The University will hold an examination at the end of each semester.

  • The course for the first semester is called LL.M. Part-I. Students shall take two compulsory papers and one optional paper from the area of specialization.
  • The course for the first semester is called LL.M. Part-II. Including two compulsory papers and one optional paper from the area of specialization, a student will have to write a thesis and appear for the viva-voce examination.
  • In order to be eligible for the examinations, students are required to attend 75% of the total number of lectures delivered.
  • Students have to select the thesis work at the beginning of the second semester and also the topic of the thesis will be based on the area of specialization chosen in the first semester.
  • The thesis work shall be approved by the Chairperson of the Department of Laws.
  • In order to qualify in the LLM Course and get approved for the degree certificate, the students are required to pass the eligibility criteria:

  • The thesis works shall be prepared under a Teacher Supervisor appointed by the Chairperson of the Department.
  • Students shall submit their thesis work in three typed copies along with a certificate of the supervisor claiming that the thesis work is completed by the student himself/herself under their guidance.
  • A student who has appeared in the LL.M. Part-I Examination may be permitted to proceed to the second semester even if he/she fails to obtain passing marks in any of the first-semester courses.
  • Such students will have to re-appear for the examination of the courses in which he/she failed during the LL.M. Part-II Examination.

Ques. What is the seat intake of the LLM course offered at Himachal Pradesh University (HPU) Shimla?

Ans. The total number of seats offered by HOU for its LLM course is 21. However, it offers subsidized seats to 16 candidates and non-subsidized seats have an intake of 5.

Ques. What does the consistent academic record mean in order to be eligible for the LL.M. Course offered at HPU?

Ans. Consistent good academic record means that the candidate shall either have at least 55% aggregate marks in the 10th, 12th, and Graduation examination or 50% marks in each of the examinations.

Ques. What is the fee for the application form for the LLM Programme offered by HPU?

Ans. Application forms will be separate for subsidized and Non-subsidized seats. Candidates are required to pay the application fee of INR 1000 online. Ques. Is the duration of the LL.M. Programme offered by HPU is 2 years?

Ans. No. The duration of the LL.M. Programme offered by HPU is for 1 year. However, if a candidate fails to obtain a Master of Laws Degree in one year shall cease to be a student unless specially permitted by the Vice-Chancellor to do so in two years.

Such candidates will be permitted to appear in the examination or submit a thesis as late college students. The student shall clear LL.M. Part-I and Part-II examination which will be taken together within a period of two years.
