This course gives students the chance to develop and further extend their combined interests in the English language and literature. Students will learn about the forms and functions of English and examine the use of language in its social and cultural context while exploring a range of literary and non-literary texts from the Renaissance to the present day and from the West Indies to the West Midlands.
Throughout the program, students will be given the theoretical, philosophical and contextual tools with which to critically examine the process of linguistic analysis and literary interpretation. Upon completion, they'll be able to make informed judgments about how linguistic structures and literary texts shape our existing social practices and notions of cultural capital.
