Zaid Pathan Review at Sheffield Hallam University [SHU], Sheffield | Collegedunia

Learning from the best faculty!

ZP
6.7 /10

It had the programme that fitted my bill. It's a great city for international students. With two world-class and state-of-the-art research universities, thousands of graduates remain in the city. The digital and new media industries in the city are growing at a faster rate than anywhere else in the UK. Therefore there will be tons of new opportunities for fresh graduates. Also, the city is rich in aspects of culture, arts, ethnicity and nature.

Course Curriculum :

It's been only two weeks into studying so I can't say much. But yeah, my course is up to date with all the latest media practices. The covid lockdown has affected the practical and industrial exposure, but as soon as the relaxation begins, we'll have them as well.

Exams :

IELTS - minimum score required: 6.5 overall with 5.5 in all modules. My IELTS result: R: 8, S: 6.5, W: 6.5, L: 6.0, Overall: 7.0 Applications will also be considered for candidates who don’t have a degree but can provide evidence of relevant professional experience.

Placement :

Universities have links with very well-established industrial organizations (BBC, ITV, Yorkshire Post). I don't have the numbers but the university's blog mentions that graduates have a great employment success rate in journalism and PR. Success stories involve graduates taking roles such as reporter, communications assistant, TV journalist, news editor, freelance reporter, sports writer, digital journalist, and many more.

Internship :

No, Not yet.

Events :

Unfortunately, as per the current circumstances, I cannot say anything about that. The government guidelines say that they will review the situation at the end of February and decide whether or not to start the on-campus teaching. Everything is happening online now.

Fees :

£14,460 (Indian students get a discount of about £2000-2500 as per some UK government scheme)

Scholarship :

No, I didn't receive any scholarship.

Faculty :

The faculty-to-student ratio is quite low in my course. It's about 1:15. All the faculties are very well versed in their subjects and have got loads of teaching experience. My course leader Julie Gillin has left a good impact on me so far. She's just not a great tutor but a great communicator as well and before every class, she involves in an informal chat about all ongoing things for a while. Also, she arranged an extra session for new starters (January intake).

Hostel :

There is plenty of student accommodations available here. You can search online or get in touch with private landlords. All accommodations have basic facilities. However, you need to check whether bills are included in your rent or not. Generally, private properties are cheaper than student accommodation. But you might have to share it with other students/professionals. Ensuites, non-ensuites, halls, apartments, and studios are some different types of accommodation you can get according to your budget. Normally, you should expect to pay £70-90 per week for your accommodation in Sheffield.
