Top Scholarships in UK for Indian students by the UK government

The quality of education in the UK is the major source of attraction to study in the country, However, due to the higher cost of living, students forgo their dream. According to a survey conducted by the Office for National Statistics, more than 91% of students in England are struggling with financial difficulties, taking out debts for additional debts. Keeping the situation in mind, there are almost 75 fully-funded scholarship programmes for students. The UK government offers several scholarships, bursaries and financial support to students to complete their education, and there are five major scholarships where an Indian student can apply.

Chevening Scholarship:

These are one year grants for a one-year master's degree in the UK, given to academically excellent students. The scholarship covers tuition fees, economy-class return airfare, and living allowance. Candidates must complete all components of undergraduate study, in order to be accepted for postgraduate study by UK universities. Besides academic excellence, they must demonstrate leadership skills, references, and an unconditional offer from a UK university. Candidates should have two years of work experience. Successful applicants are required to return to their country of citizenship for a minimum of two years, after the end of the period of the award.

The applicant should have received an unconditional offer from the universities by July 13, 2023.

Commonwealth Scholarship

This scholarship is divided into two:

Commonwealth Masters Scholarship

This scholarship is offered by the Department for International Development (DFID) for international applicants from Commonwealth countries, intending to pursue Masters and Ph.D. in the UK. This is a fully funded scholarship, offering a thesis grant (if required), living allowances, and airfare to and from the UK. The candidate should have at least an upper second class degree (2:1) honors standard and a relevant postgraduate qualification.

Commonwealth Fellowship Plan

This is also a fully funded scholarship, one economy class return, and many more allowances. The applicant has to be a resident or a citizen of a Commonwealth country, and have at least an upper second class degree (2:1) honors standard.

In both these scholarships, the student needs to demonstrate that they will need help to afford the tuition fee and cost of living in the UK.

Candidates should have completed their degree with at least an upper second class degree, and begin their academic study in the UK by September, 2023.

GREAT Scholarship:

Jointly funded by the UK government, and the British Council under the study UK campaign, this program provides scholarships for 99 postgraduate programs, from 36 UK universities; for Indian students, 12 institutions are offering 13 postgraduate scholarships worth 10,000 GBP (10 lakhs INR). The application deadline varies according to the institution. Candidates should meet the English and other academic requirements set forth by UK HEI.

Charles Wallace India Trust Scholarship:

Interested candidates from any stage of their career can apply to the Charles Wallace India Trust Scholarship, set up as an English charity. Run by four trustees, applicants interested in heritage conservation, arts or humanities can apply. The scholarship includes accommodation and living costs in the UK and a travel grant of 700 GBP (70,000 INR) for international travel costs. Candidates with work experience are preferred.

Applications for long-term grants are closed for 2023, but the deadline for short-term grants are open till 28 February 2023.

Scotland Saltire Scholarship:

This is offered for the programmes in Creative Industries, technology, science, medical sciences, healthcare, and renewable and clean energy. There are 50 awards, each worth 8000 GBP (8.05 lakhs INR) for a one-year full time master’s program at a Scottish university.
